Owner description: A romantic house and gallery set in beautiful riverside gardens. Ancient trees, bubbling brooks and rolling lawns frame this lovely old house. Crafted from a medieval priory, it is full of surprises, with art that intrigues and delights. Come back throughout the year to see different exhibitions in the gallery. Carpets of spring bulbs, a stunning walled rose garden, rich autumn leaves and a colourful winter garden make Mottisfont a feast for the senses all year round. There's space to run, jump and play, and always something for families to do.

Just a quick visit to see the exhibition . This keep changing every few weeks . So look on NT website Were excellent to see staff have done a great job both inside e and outside working hard on the grounds getting ready for summer. Not a lot of colour in garden this time of year. Car was staffed as very busy and some areas were unsuitable to park car a the previous night had lots of rain and caused some flooding .

As usual we took the grandchildren to egg hunt at Mottisfont. However, this year the hunt was very poorly organised. This might have been as a result of the very poor ground conditions. But the map was incomprehensible to all the adults, one who had qualified as a cartographer, albeit more than 50 years ago.

The abbey especially during school holidays is very busy. But this might have as a result of being the first fine dry day after a very long winter. But, the facilities were tested to the limit.

One good point was they called the event a Easter Egg Hunt!

I love visiting Mottisfont it is quite close to home and free with National Trust membership so makes for a great day out. The car park is always busy as is the cafe which serves some lovely hot food dishes dependent on the season. The walks around the estate agent the biggest but the gardens are really nice when they are in bloom especially all the roses in the gardens.

We went to see the Heath Robinson exhibition. Midweek the car park was busy but had space. Very friendly buggy driver took us from the entrance to the Abbey. First thing had a very nice mixed bean and bread lunch. The house is very interesting especially the tromp-loeil in the downstairs room, nothing is what it seems.
The exhibition was worth the visit but has ended now.
There are very nice walks along the river with lots of fish to see. In summer there is a wonderful rose garden.

Surprising for a National Trust property, Mottisfont is open every day (except Christmas). A jewel in an otherwise barren countryside for NT properties. Good disabled access and a free buggy taxi from the entrance to the house. We visited to see the Heath Robinson exhibition (probably now closed) but there is an interesting programme of exhibitions throughout the year. However, there is no disabled access to the exhibition galleries. The café in the old stables is just that, a cafe with sandwiches and buns. The main restaurant is in the basement of the house with the usual NT fare including children's lunch boxes. TIP: Toilets just inside entrance.
