Chicago is a great town for steakhouses and Ruth's Chris Steak House is one of the very best. Located at 431 North Dearborn Parkway in downtown Chicago, a short walk from the North Michigan Avenue shopping mecca and the gala saloons and bars and entertainment centers in the River North neighborhood, Ruth's Chris is a popular destination for steak lovers of all ages. This is the national restaurant chain that was founded by single mom Ruth Fertel in New Orleans in 1965. Today, it is a coast-to-coast chain that specializes in good steaks, from 8-ounce petite filets to 40-ounce porterhouse and 40-ounce ribeye and all the trimmings. The Ruth's Chris location on North Dearborn is always lively and loud, either for lunch or dinner. Businessmen frequent the restaurant. Upscale shoppers, too. Customers don't have long to wait. The service is swift and attentive. The biggest problem is to decide which steak to order...filets or ribeye or New York strips or porterhouse or T-bone. We started with lobster bisque and a jumbo shrimp cocktail. My wife chose the 8-ounce petite filet, medium well. I was tempted to try something different, like a 16-ounce bone-in filet with six large shrimp or the petite filet and shrimp (two 4-ounce medallions and three large shrimp), but I couldn't resist the signature 11-ounce filet mignon, also medium well, with a baked potato. Some day, when we're really hungry, I'd like to tackle a 40-ounce porterhouse for two. But then we'd probably have to pass up dessert and Ruth's chocolate duo, cake and mousse, and that would be a shame. That's what we chose this time. But the white chocolate bread pudding also is highly recommended. Be sure to arrive with a hearty appetite.
