Owner description: The largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere! Housed in the only remaining building from the 1893 World’s Fair, MSI is a Chicago must-see. You’ll experience 14 acres of hands-on exhibits and have the chance to stand before a 40-foot tornado; climb aboard a World War II German submarine; take a run in a human-sized hamster wheel; descend into an Illinois coal mine; tour a fully functioning eco-friendly home; board a 727 hanging from the ceiling; transmit your pulse to a 13-foot, 3-D beating heart; and much more! MSI is not a place where you walk around quietly and observe. No way! You get involved in the fun—and learn—by doing. Just a few miles from downtown with convenient underground parking.
Useful Information: Activities for young children

This place is awesome. If you have children, be sure to plan a half day for this museum. When I was a kid it was free and parking was free, so the $15 ticket and $20 parking was a little irritating -- but it's worth it. Be sure to wait in line for entry to the coal mine. It's great. Go see the chicks hatching from eggs. Don't miss the "stages of life" fetus/baby display or the many educational exhibits. Get there early!

We arrived early this time, our experience the last time was waiting in line for tickets. We bought the Chicago City Pass at a previous museum, and were there at opening. Still spent a few minutes in line, but not bad. The highlight for all of us was the submarine tour and Train Story. The kids loved this museum, we didn't see it all even, and were there from 9:30 am-2 pm. The Tornado movie mostly kept our kids attention, but wasn't a great highlight. Arrive early to find free street parking across the street from the museum.

Fantastic permanent exhibits and some of the best traveling exhibits to come through the Midwest. The building is impressive, and the collection extensive. Great for kids and a blast for adults. Not as easy to get to via the CTA as some of the other museums in the city, but well worth the trip.
