Jim's is located just off Veteran's Parkway on Washington Street, a bit past the corner occupied by a Jimmy John's franchise. The exterior is unassuming and likely to be missed if you are not looking, but once inside, anyone over forty feels totally comfortable with the dimly-lit "time travel decor," the piano bar, the comfortable booths or the lower level main dining room. Jim's seems to be a leftover from the fifties, and some of the clientele fit right in as they sip their Rob Roys at the bar or take a smooth, slow spin on the little dance floor. The atmosphere is all Fifties, and all that is missing is the heavy cigarette smoke, but the place is a true reminder of those better, cooler, slower days when cellphones were something you read about in Popular Mechanics.
Turning to the food, Jim's lives up to the first impression and the menu is, as you would expect, shrimp cocktails, steaks, and chicken, with sides like creamed spinach and au gratin potatoes. After my first extra chilled straight up martini with two olives, I knew Jim's was already on my favorites list, and the follow up meal did not disappoint. Excellent service, wonderful people watching, and good value. Stop in any time you are in Bloomington, IL.
