About us: Family of three from San Francisco area of the US, two adults in the mid-50’s and one 11-year old son. Extensive travelers with a focus on variety. We travel to experience other cultures, food and explore world’s people and geographies. We enjoy active vacations with a variety of outdoor activities & adventures. We prefer staying in a variety of accommodations, from world class hotels and resorts to small, rustic boutique properties. When traveling, we look for clean & comfortable accommodations and usually will combine luxury hotels with rustic locations in our itineraries.

Property (4 Stars): The property is a former private estate consisting of a main two story structure. The ground floor is the lobby area and a large group dinning table. The second floor of this build has dinning deck, bar & library all surrounding a large Koi pond. The main gathering area is surrounded by eight guest rooms bungalows which are converted Thai rice barns. The pool area is small but nice with a pool large enough to swim laps. The property is on a 40-acre plantation of lush vegetation with a rain forest feel sitting atop a mountain with expansive views both East and West.

Staff (5+ Stars): All of the Staff at Molihom are amazing! We really appreciated their attentiveness and friendliness. The service was impeccable, they arranged great transportation, food was wonderful and service was 5-star! They really made us feel welcome and did an awesome job!

Room (3++ Stars): We stayed in the “Baanmai” room. Don’t let the 3-stars turn you away. Each room has its own semi private setting tucked away in the forest. With a Rain Forest setting comes the expected critters & AM/PM insects (at least when we were there). We didn’t mind as we expected it but some of you may want to be aware. So pack some repellant, thin long sleeves shirts & pants and enjoy the friendly lizards!

All of the rooms at Malihom are converted Thia rice barns. They are clean, comfortable and have a jungle rustic feel to them. The rooms on the East side of the estate will get the sunrise view and those on the West will get the sunset view. Our room was set-up to sleep three. Beds are comfortable and there is a small bathroom attached to the room with just a toilet and sink. The main bathroom for our bungalow was down a short flight of stairs off the deck. This bathroom is good size with a sink, counter, shower and secluded outdoor bathtub.

Food (5 Stars): The food was fantastic. We had a variety but for dinner we selected the Burmese option, delicious and highly recommended. You can get a good steak anywhere so try something different! Breakfast was good and the Basillo eggs were awesome!

Location (3+ Stars): Beautiful Rain Forest estate on the top of a hill with 360 degree views of the forest and ocean. It is remote so don’t plan on trekking of to grab food or snacks. Once there, I suggest planning on staying and enjoying the property.

Overall (4 Stars): Great boutique hotel in a unique setting. If you truly want to experience all of the Island, a few days in the mountains is a necessity. The staff is wonderful and the Malihom forces you to relax and enjoy the tranquil setting. Plan to just chill…

Things to note: Internet is unreliable so plan accordingly. Cell service seemed fairly good, but the data service did not work for us. The location is remote so, unless you have your own car, plan to eat and drink on the property.

Room Tip: We stayed in Baanmi and enjoyed the Sunrise

After completing the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, my husband and I flew to Malaysia. Our first stop was the Malihom Private Estate. An absolute must. Nestled in a tropical forest, the property offers private rice houses, an infinity pool and delicious meals! The views are extraoridnary and the staff are wonderful. Peace and quite is at the top of the menu! Only 45 minute drive from downtown Penang. So, so great!

Room Tip: We stayed in Alumn. Fantastic!

My wife and I (in our late sixties) had just spent time jungle treking on the mainland and following our stay at the Malihom had booked time to explore Georgetown and the Langkawi. We, therefore, booked the Malihom as a place to relax for 3 nights and 4 days and found it to be the perfect retreat. The Malihom is a retreat at the top of a rainforest outside of Georgetown, the location is breath taking with great views of the rainforest, georgetown (particualrly at night) and the malacca straits. From booking the Malihom and throughout our stay we found all staff to be helpful and friendly, they arranged airport transfers, taxi to Georgetown and made sure that we had an enjoyable stay.
We booked the Sanook barn on the advice of the lady who took our booking as it was next to the pool and only a few metres to the bar and restaurant. The barn was perfect for us as it had a large balcony and great views of the rainforest and the Malacca Straits, the barn was on two floors with the upper floor being the bedroom and the lowerfloor being the bathroom and balcony, the bedroom had a small WC so you did not have to go down to the bathroom at night.
The environment we found to be a delight, a back to nature experience with all the smells and noise of the rainforest, why some people have complained about the noise that the insects and other rainforest creatures make during the day and night I find hard to understand as it is a rainforest, so would suggest that people make sure this is the environment for them. Equally it may not be the best location for anyone with mobility issues.
The Malihom has only 8 barns and during the time we were there it was quiet with only 2 or 3 other barns occupied so we were able to enjoy the serenity that the Mlihom provided. To pick up on a point some other reviewers have mentioned that the place is untidy, we did not find this to be the case, the pool was always cleaned every morning and we saw no extrainious rubbish. Yes there are a lot of leaves all over the estate, but you are in a rainforest and by nature they have a lot of trees, though I would agree that some of the outside furniture would benefit from a fresh coat of paint.
Regarding food, breakfast was adaquate without being extensive; fresh fruit, eggs cooked in a variety of ways, fresh juice, toast and tea or coffee. We did not bother with lunch but had dinner on each of our three nights, the first night western and on the second and third nights burmese. I would definately recommend the burmese, the food was very tasty and the selection different on both nights. Prices are a little high, particularly compared with street or cafe food, but are comparable with most hotel prices. The Malihom is the ideal place to relax, breath fresh air and experience nature.

Room Tip: The Sanook barn is right next to the pool and has fabulous views over the Malacca Straits

I still remember the trip up from the Penang Intl.airport. As your ascend, you'll see lush pristine rainforest, and a cool breeze as the temperature drops, and there'll be views of both the sea (Straits of Malacca) and Bayan Lepas (a town with dozens of electronics and semiconductor plants that lits up at night).
Once you enter this place, the architecture of the lodges, he pool, the koi pond, the restaurant and the surrounding hills and trees will captivate you. You'll feel the wind, the sound of leaves ristling, the view and sound of birds and insects and the sense of privacy and serenity.

The Burmese staff serves high quality western cuisines amidst a backdrop of gorgeous scenery. I can't never forget the image and experience of this place. We only hope owners of the nearby surrounding hills do not indiscriminately choo down those pristine leafy trees. Malihom is worth the trip and the experience. I misses it!

This was a very nice stay and we have excellent memories from it. The burmese staff is very smiley and friendly.
Do not expect a luxury getaway though. The common areas are quite dusty but it seems in the middle of the jungle, spider webs come back everyday and the atmosphere can be quite humid. Please expect all sorts of bugs around, which nature lovers will enjoy and seasoned city dwellers may find harrowing! We did not find the cooking to our taste and tried to go down to Balik Pulau or Teluk Kumbar for food. The staff kindly drove us down and up the steep hill, and we laboriously got some Uber or Grab to pick us up at the shelter down the hill. I definitely recommend Balik Pulau for food, especially Nan Guan!
At night, the jungle makes quite a rucus. The rooms are definitely not sound proofed (no glass and only mosquito netting) and black-out of windows a little random. The mattress was also on the hard side. Light sleepers may be better served with sleeping mask and earplugs. You are warned.

Room Tip: Sanook room by the pool has very nice views and is quiet. It can accomodate a child bed.
