I played here on a Friday with a friend who visited from Boston. I live in Palm Beach County and I've played at Madison Green several times over the last 10-15 years, so I was familiar with the course. I remembered it as always being in great condition and well-maintained along with a great pro-shop and clubhouse.

However, this is the first time I've played here in about 5 years and the place we played this time was significantly different than the Madison Green of the past, both on and off the course.

There used to be a very nice pro-shop that was always stocked with merchandise, including clothing, shoes, and equipment; all quality stuff, too! Not anymore. Now, the pro-shop is located in a new building that was built 3 years ago. The new pro-shop has next to nothing inside and has absolutely no character to it. It's basically a small room with a cash register for taking greens fees and not much else--- certainly not a place I would buy anything, even if there was a selection of merchandise, which there is none.

The green fee was $59 per player which is typical for this time of the year and time of day. My friend rented a set of clubs for $60, which I think is a little steep and unreasonable in my opinion.

There was a one-hour delay due to cold temperatures and frost. So, my friend and I wanted to get a bite to eat and a cup of coffee while waiting. No luck. The restaurant in the clubhouse (more on that later) was not open---- not even a place to get a cup of coffee or a soft drink----- so, we got back in the car and went to Dunkin' Donuts.

Once back at the course, we were ready to tee off. We went out as a twosome. The course was not crowded at all, probably due to the cold weather.

When I stepped onto the first tee I immediately noticed some changes--- and not for the better. The tee markers were cheap painted pieces of wood--- it might seem like a small detail, but I mention it because they used to have much nicer tee markers in the past. Some of the ball washers at each tee had no water in them and no towels!! Others had towels that were dirty and/or torn and ripped!! Also, the tee boxes were in lousy condition and chewed up. The grass was slightly brownish in color--- not burned out, but not green and lush like I remember. Perhaps it's the type of grass they use? Not sure, but either way the tee boxes were not in very good shape.

The fairways were in worse shape than the tee boxes. There were divots EVERYWHERE with bare spots and inconsistencies in the grass. Again, the grass had a slightly brown hue to it. I always remembered the grass here being green and the fairways in great condition. Not now. Some sand traps were poorly maintained. There are waste areas here, too, and sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference between the two. Be 'ware.

The greens weren't much better. There were ball marks (old and new) EVERYWHERE. I've never seen so many ball marks as I saw here. The maintenance staff obviously makes no effort (or, doesn't have the equipment or know-how) to repair ball marks. I believe a new course superintendent might be needed here.

I've read and heard that they hold qualifying tournaments for the PGA Tour's Honda Classic here. I can't see how that can be with course conditions like this.

After our round, my friend and I were hungry and thirsty. The "old" Madison Green that I remember had a very nice restaurant and bar in the same building that had the nice pro-shop. Not anymore. Now, the restaurant and bar are in the same new building with the nondescript pro-shop. We considered having lunch and drinks but were turned off by very loud music from a jukebox in the bar. I love music, but this was so loud we thought there might be a wedding. We left and went to a pub down the road.

If you are familiar with Florida golf, you know there is a golf course on almost every corner--- like gas stations. There are plenty of other courses to play besides this one, especially at the rates they charge at Madison Green. I don't mind paying for value, but there is no value here anymore. Play someplace else-----

Wow! if you are not in the middle of the fairways, you are going to be penalized, lots of water, traps, wood.....the course is interesting slope at 145 from the gold marker not the back I believe 154. This is by far the most difficult course that I played in my golf carreer. I was there with my wife and she hates it, she had not fun to play it. If you are an average player, I am not sure this is going to be fun for you, if you don't mind loosing 2 to 3 balls per holes ( specific holes) than it is OK, if you are slicing your drive than good luck, if you are not counting your stroke than again it is fine. We played with someone from the region and we was really mad about the course and he was a 15 handicap. I am tough with my review, the course is nice layout, a lot of difficult holes and shots, clean the wood make it more fun to play.

Please had more bathroom facilities for the ladies....only one on 18 holes or you need to come back to the club house between 9 holes.

Personaly, the greens were not the same speed....yes it is still only February

time of play 4:35 hours

My verdict: personaly I am not coming back there is too many great golf clubs in the region

It's like knowing certain death tho I didn't drive 600 golf balls to its death, the course was very challenging this is one place I'd want a GPS. If I played here a couple more times maybe I'd feel more comfortable. The day I played the greens were aerated. You can get a decent rate from Canam.golf.net or golfnow.com.

New owner came in a couple of years ago and promised to create a world-class attraction. Has not happened. In fact, the food in the new restaurant is frozen and rehydreated; the course has seen 3 or 4 groundskeepers, with each leaving after not getting the supplies they were promised. Go to the county-owned course at Okeeheelee instead, and you'll have a great round of golf for half the price.
