Owner description: Experience 12,000 years of powerful stories at the Tampa Bay History Center. During your journey, you will stroll through a 1920s-era cigar store, row up the Hillsborough River, ride along with a cattle drive and learn about the early exploration of Florida. This waterfront building, with an eclectic Museum Store and the signature Columbia Cafe, is a memorable experience for families, history enthusiasts, Tampa area natives and beyond.

“Unexpected delight”
Reviewed 29 January 2012

Well I was reluctant to go despite liking museums the items listed did not seem to appeal to my interests. Luckily, upon arrival and browsing through the various exhibits it was quite fun and interesting. Lots of great Floridian history and illustrations and concepts of how Tampa natives were impacted and effected the United States as a whole. At the time they had the top floor transformed into a special movie-costume exhibit too which was rather exciting seeing some of the cool outfits (Darth Vader!) on display. The cigar and agricultural exhibits were also rather fun to experience.

“Expensive - Not a lot to see”
Reviewed 28 January 2012

The museum building is nice and it looks like a good exhibit - but once you start going through it you realize there is very little in the way of meaningful content. A lot of random items, some of which connect to Tampa. For the $12 admission fee there is barely 45 minutes worth of material to explore.

“Good but Pricey”
Reviewed 12 January 2012

Local historical museums need to be interactive and fun for adults and kids alike as to bring in the crowds. I found the exhibits enlightening and mildly amusing; such as a reader for cigar makers. What really made this center stand out however is the cigar history they presented by showing artifacts, short films and interactive displays that even made my son enjoy this part of the exhibit. In fact I found the area about cigar making better than my whole visit to Ybor City.

Now the price. Unfortunately for the amount of time you spend and what the exhibits offer this museum could be significantly cheaper. Okay, there was superhero costume exhibit while we were there, but the increase in price did justify the small "extra" exhibit. This is the main reason I cannot give it 4 stars because of the price.

But if you are into cigar history and are disappointed with Ybor City then the Tampa Bay History Center is for you.

“Not much to see here. I guess Tampa Bay doesn't have much history of significance.”

Nice new facility in downtown location adjacent to arena. Not a bad use of time while waiting to embark on your cruise on the next block.
