After an incredibly frustratingly afternoon arguing with the knuckleheads at Fort Myers airport, we decided on dinner out, our first visit to The Perfect Caper. While we were aware that it was on the pricier side, the dinner was worth every penny. The entrees, especially the Duck, were outstanding. Nice presentation of each dinner, service attentive but not annoying, cocktails imaginative, wine list very adequate. By far, the best restaurant in Punta Gorda.

Recently we met two other couples for a lunch gathering as full time residents rarely take time to do so the group settled on the Caper. When we walked in we were greeted nicely by the long term maitre'd and then we stated no reservation and quickly were lectured that we should know better........ Wow, where did that come from? Even though we felt abased we still remained for lunch which was mostly pleasant. Then the bill came and the confusion began. We enjoyed their version of a prix fixe menu for two which was very fairly priced but then the bill showed full price(which should be the tipped on amount which three of us have been in the service industry in Punta Gorda for 30+ years understand) but then the adjusted price with a 18% gratuity already added?????? Now bear in mind I am NOT faulting the staff as she was very accommodating this was farrrr too confusing than it needed to be! Yes, we have all had our fair share of the "oh I didn't know that 15% is the average tip percentage" among other excuses but bottom line it left a bad taste and we don't think this was James or Jeanies objective! We, as servers and bar tenders, lean toward 25%+ for good service and 30% isn't uncommon. It's just sad the visit was bracketed with odd experiences and good in the middle! We are locals and love the Roland's and the Caper but felt this needed attention. As a side note the restaurant was half empty for our entire meal?

Reservations a must. Arrived on a Wednesday evening and it was busy from the time I arrived (early) and lined up when I left. Their is a Prix Fix menu which is cheaper with smaller portions than the regular menu; had to ask for this menu as it was not given or mentioned to us. We all (party of 4) had the filly mignon 4 oz.. For some reason my plate was cool (potatoes and vegetable) It was sent back to warm; however my med rare steak was now medium when returned... Not impressed with this although all was very tasty. The appetizers were good. Calamari was tender and served with a hot & sour sauce (Asian inspired). Mussels good and soup good. Wine was on t he prix fix menu - 2 glasses for an extra $10. Note that they were 4 oz each. We opted not to have desert. Service was good, atmosphere fine, food presented well and tasty. However be prepared to dig into wallet. We felt it was overpriced and we have had fine dining all over the word. This is a small town and this restaurant although rated prices higher than others perhaps in the area didn't justify skyscraper prices.

The Caper delivers great cuisine and service. We frequent them for special occasions and have not been disappointed. Their duck is excellent.

The food was so good we couldn't believe it. We had a burger with bacon and brie, lobster mac and cheese and they give you a little dessert cube. It's really yummy. You should dress up a bit. It's not typical Punta gorda. You'll be glad you came.
