Stay Report - 12/19 to 12/20

Location: The hotel is located in Downtown Miami on Brickell Avenue just south of the Miami River.  It's located in a really nice part of downtown in walking distance to the Kimpton Epic, the JW and a few other hotels with excellent dining.  Also there's nicely a number of CVS locations including a 24 hour one you can walk to.  It is a little annoying to get onto I-95 due to the roadways around here but you can still get to MIA in 15 minutes.

Hotel: The hotel is a modern 15 story high rise with attached Residences which is a longer building.  The lobby is comparatively small and only contains as small sitting area and coffee shop.  The pool deck is on the 15th floor and up there is a restaurant and bar.  Do note that on weekdays there is no in room dining or dining at the restaurant.  The spa is currently closed but the fitness center remains open.  Parking is valet only with in and out privileges at $42 a day.

Check In: A friendly agent helped get me checked in and offered me points or breakfast as an amenity.  All the staff I met here were extremely friendly and helpful.

Room: I booked a Spectacular Guest Room and applied a SNA and was upgraded to a Marvelous Suite.  The room was incredible.  There was a huge living room with desk, TV, couch and two chairs, a dining table, a kitchen area with a microwave, fridge and range top and a powder room.  The separate bedroom was large with another TV, a balcony with a view of the river and a huge bathroom with separate tub and shower.  It's one of the best hotels in the US I've stayed in in fact.

Dining: I visited the bar for a drink and then took breakfast at the restaurant as well.  Breakfast is a buffet with a server handling all the food.  It had cereal, fruit, yogurt, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, chicken sausage and waffles.  I will say some of the food was pretty low quality.  The waffles were clearly frozen and served with Smuckers Breakfast Syrup.  Service though was amazing.

Overall the hotel was a touch pricy at $219 but I really enjoyed my stay.  The room and service made it all worth it.

Had to go inside and argue with the staff to get a bell cart to check-in. I don't know if these are in high demand for theft but they were very reluctant. Check-in was "smooth" until we got to our room. The assigned room was not cleaned or ready. The bellman was very quick to call the front desk and get us a new assignment. On Thanksgiving day nothing at the hotel was open before 1:30 pm which made lunch difficult. After going off property we went to the pool. All of the spots in the sun were taken so we settled on the shade. The pool was pleasant and the hot tub (medium size pool) was very comfortable. In-room experience was not bad until bed time. The front desk sent up ice quickly and the room was spacious and comfortable. Small fridge and cook-top were available although there were not cooking utensils or pans. Once it was time for bed it became apparent that it would not be a dark room. The curtains are not adequate to block out light with considerable gaps at the top. Fortunately it was not overly loud (it is downtown Miami with the occasional siren and loud sports car) but nothing crazy on the volume. Plenty of security on premise so felt safe while there.

This is a weird hotel.

When you're in the room, it feels like the place is abandoned. The rooms are dated and in desperate need of renovation. Lamps are huge, creepy dragons, which stare at the bed. There were no robes or slippers. There was no laundry bag. There was no hairdryer. There was no iron. There was no turndown service. A towel was stained. There is no view and it’s very noisy. There's a tiny kitchenette with a stove and microwave. Both looked old and gross. The cieling paint in the shower was bubbly and the shower door handle had some sticky residue. Hallways are dark and smell weird.

All amenities are part of the Icon condo complex. So once you go to the pool area, nothing is branded as W. It's all called Icon...Icon Spa, Icon Cafe, Icon Pool. Even the amenity employees don't work for W. But don't worry - everything is still closed except for the pool. So no gym, no spa, no restaurants. I'm surprised that this is part of the W brand.

As an FYI - there are no restrooms to use outside of the rooms. I found this out after I tried to use one after checking out to change before going to the airport. We finally got someone to unlock a restroom that was supposedly "under renovation".

The Epic is 100x better and right next door - with great views. It's also cheaper. I would have checked out, but it was pouring rain outside.

Room tip: Don't stay here. There are a ton of other options.

I'm a loyal Marriott guest who stayed in the hotel last week just to find the Suite Night Award that I put in was used to get me into a marvelous suite which was dirty, stained and filthy. Requests from the operator (whatever whenever) to change our rooms were answered with full occupancy sarcasm. Vallet (42$ a night) manager presented 20 rooms occupancy during that night. I was shocked. Not only that they don't recognize their loyal members, but the quality of rooms, cleanliness and service are at all-times low.

Room tip: Don't bother to upgrade the rooms or choose any Marvelous setting. Just plain old broken and ugly. TVs are from early 2000s.

Bait + Switch is the best way to describe this property. Surprised this property is part of the W Brand. It was disgusting and filthy. We checked in and out within 30 mins of arrival. Our room looked nothing like the images provided on the website. Not only is the furniture and room outdated, its filthy. Stains all over it. The room had dimmed lighting upon entry intentionally. We turned on the lights and it was so bad, we did not feel comfortable placing our luggage down let alone our head on a bed. We immediately informed the supervisor on duty and he apologized, took us to a different room, SAME EXACT thing! We showed him photos of the room on the Website and he too was shocked. What made matters worse, we were still charged one night even though we checked out moments later because it was deceiving. The manager Victoria was no help at all and said there was nothing she could do. In summary, DO NOT come to this property. We did have a better experience at the W in Ft Lauderdale. Cleaner and represents Marriott's Luxury brand as it should. STAY AWAY FROM W BRICKELL AVE. You are paying a hefty process for the location but its disgusting and filthy.
