“Nice Family Hotel”
Reviewed 23 November 2011

The my kids, 11, 9, 6 and my husband and I loved the activities they had for the kids so we had some alone time together. The ocean view one bedroom room had a beautiful view since it was on the end with extra windows. Loved the roominess and accomodations. It did smell a little musty when you first walked in, by the airconditioner, but wasn't too overpowering. The room and location made up for it. Everyone in the office and by the pool was very nice. Met a nice family there.

The only thing I we were really let down by were the pools. We were sooo excited to try the slide and indoor pool, but the water smelled fishy and salty. My husband swore that it was a salt water pool. The pool attendant said it was fresh water with clorine, but too many people were jumping in from the ocean without showering first. We've been to lots of hotels near the ocean and never experienced that smell before. Maybe if there was more chlorine or cleaned more it would have been better. It looked beautiful by the pool, with the tropical flowers and the wind shield window was a nice touch. Please clean your pool a little better and we will definitely be back.

As owner of the Sun Viking Lodge, I would like to thank this guest for this review. We were happy to read that this family loved our family activity program and that they enjoyed the location and view of their oceanfront room. The roominess of the accommodation is a comment we hear often, especially from families. Since July, when this guest stayed with us, we have replaced all the carpeting in every room, so the musty smell should be completely gone! Once again, the comment this guest made that our office and pool staff were very nice is a comment we hear all the time. We were happy to read that this family met another nice family (we have the nicest guests); this happens all the time with many families, who then make plans for their next stay with us, so they can “hang-out” again during their next vacation.

More importantly, I would like to apologize to this guest for the discomfort of a salty, fishy smell, she and her family felt came from our pools. I would like to guarantee that our pools and hot tub use only fresh, clean city water; we use chlorine in all and manually check the chlorine and chemical levels several times each day. In addition, both our pools and hot tub chemicals are continuously computer tested, which controls the amounts of chemicals and chlorine that is dispensed by our pool pumps. We also get unannounced water quality checks on a regular basis by our county health department with good reports. It is true that some of our guests’ just jump into the pool with ocean water on their swimsuits, so a little bit of seawater may enter our pools. However, this should be such a minimal amount compared to the tens-of -thousands of gallons of water it would not be noticed. Since we have not heard of this complaint about our pools before, I am a little unsure what these guests could have smelled. I have a few thoughts on what “might” be the culprit: the first is, occasionally, if we have strong tropical ocean breezes, coming in as an ocean mist, this can have a salty, fishy smell; generally, this is not that common; a second thought is that in the middle of the night, our irrigation system waters our grass and it uses underground well water which contains a certain amount of salt in it along with the element sulfur, which at times is stronger than other times, resulting in a odd smell.

We are sincerely sorry that this guest and her family were not completely happy and we hope that they decide to give us a second chance. All of us look forward to welcoming them back to the Sun Viking Lodge, a place where they are always welcome!

First I would like to thank this guest for taking the time to share such kind comments. It certainly warms our hearts to read of how much this guest enjoyed their stay here at the Sun Viking Lodge.

We feel that bringing grandchildren to the beach is a perfect way of connecting and sharing family time together. In our modern society, we all seem to rush from one thing to the next, barely coming up for a breath of fresh air; we feel connecting as a family is God’s way of calming us down.

We certainly agree that our employees are “exceptionally helpful and friendly” and they do sincerely care deeply for our guests and their comfort. Again, I would like to thank this guest for taking the time to send in this review and we all look forward to welcoming them back to the Sun Viking Lodge . . . a place where you are always welcome!

My family and I stayed at the Sun Viking for a long weekend and had a very nice time. The hotel is very clean and the staff exceptionally helpful and friendly. The pools were very clean as were the rooms. The Lodge is remniscent of more of a "motel" with outside room entrances etc. If you are looking for luxury or resort style facilities then the Sun viking isn't for you; However if you are looking for a no frills, inexpensive, clean and safe place to spend the weekend then it's perfect. the rooms are very dated but the cleanliness makes up for it. Beds were mediocre but the room size was fantastic; we are a family of four and had plenty of room without climbing all over eachother. The balcony overlooking the ocean offered breathtaking views. The Cons: Exterior of building and rooms are dated and made me think of a "Wally World" vacation as we pulled up although we were pleasantly surprised. They offer no on site restaurant or food off season; (however there is a Denny's just a short ride up the street); the pool is fairly small (although very well kept). All in all it was a good vacation; nothing really bad to say but I think I'll be looking for a new place next time we are in town.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review; saying we are friendly, clean and good for families is a very nice compliment, thank you. Also, we appreciate all the high ratings in the different categories; however, I was sorry to see that you did not find the beds comfortable; all rooms have brand new beds and generally, we get many compliments on them.

It does not surprise me that you found our staff exceptionally friendly and helpful, we often hear this compliment about our staff. We are happy you found the rooms and pools very clean and that you enjoyed the beautiful ocean view from your oceanfront room.

I am sorry to hear you plan on looking for a new place to stay the next time you are in town; the Griswold’s really like it here.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to send in this review. Should you change your mind to give us another try – remember you are always welcome at the Sun Viking Lodge.

We booked 2 rooms over Labor Day weekend. From our arrival on, it was a GREAT hotel. I have medical problems and did not book a ground room, the staff was so helpful and moved us to a ground room. Our children loved the slide, complimentary surf boards and sand castle building accessories. The pool attendant was very nice and when we called the front desk to ask if there was a specific restaurant close by, he went above and beyond to find it, even calling me back with directions! Fabulous Stay!!!!

I would like to thank this guest for taking the time to write such a nice review. What makes us happy is when we make our guests happy. We constantly get compliments on our staff and I am not surprised to read that our staff was able to relocate this guest to a room on the ground floor. I agree, the waterslide and guest activity program are both very popular with our guests.

Once again, thank you for such a kind review; we hope to welcome you back soon!

We stayed 4 nights at Sun Viking Lodge. It was our first stay there and we loved it. We enjoyed the beautiful indoor garden pool with beautiful waterfall and lovely flowers. The outdoor pool was enjoyable, too. We had fun watching the kids (and grownups) on the waterslide. The hot tub was so relaxing after a day on the beach.
Our oceanfront room was nice and clean with a wonderful view of beautiful Daytona Beach. The bed was very comfy and just as nice as our pillowtop at home.
Our stay was right after Hurricane Irene and we found some nice shells that washed in.
We appreciate that the facility is smoke-free and pet-free. We highly recommend Sun Viking and hope to return next year.
