Description: The Surfing Crab is a family tradition of fresh seafood and crabs that was established over 50 years ago. It all started back in 1961, when Henry Vechery opened the Bethesda Crab House. His young son, Donald Vechery began working with him at the age of just nine. Over the years, the crab house became a huge success. Around 2008, Donald wanted to branch out and build something for himself using his years of knowledge and experience. Thus, The Surfing Crab was born, providing Sussex County with 8 years of the most amazing crabs and seafood the area has seen. Come down and try our passionatly crafted dishes using the freshest seafood available!

We come down to Delaware for a big family vacation every year. Surfing Crab is quite a haul from our place, often fighting through hwy 1 traffic, but the quality of the crab always makes it worth the trip.

A couple of tips:
SC doesn't take reservations, HOWEVER, you can reserve your CRABS. Call when they open at 3pm to get the size you want.
The parking lot can be crazy - Please do not panic. Please do not ignore the driver ahead of you and start a line of 8 cars that will be forced into backing up 2 blocks. Send someone from your party to let them know you're there and sit tight until a place opens up.
You will probably have to wait for your table. It's a popular place. I saw some clever people take beach chairs out of the trunk and have a little tailgate party until their name was called. Smart!
While SC can technically handle big groups, picking crab in tight quarters sucks (which is what happened for us this last time since everybody wanted to come) 2-8 people is best if you enjoy elbow room.
Get there early if you want fried oysters and deviled eggs (you do). The hush puppies are yummy.

We always get 6-12 extra crabs to make really fresh crab cakes for the next day. Double the pleasure!!

The crab cakes are a must here! We arrived late after getting off the ferry, but still had fantastic service and food! The succotash is also recommended.

Excellent crabs in multiple sizes. We went with 6-6.5 and loved em.
Covered in J.O. #2 crab seasoning.
I could have done another dozen.
Room is basic crab shack but service was fast and friendly.
Good kid options as well. Margaritas are huge!

No frills, very family-friendly environment and prices. Very wine selection, 3 common drafts, but ok bottled beer choices. Friendly servers and good food! Actually the best steamed crabs I ever had--firm & crisp shells that snap rather than squish!

We came in a little early for dinner - about 5 on a Sunday. It turned out to be a good call as it was busy when we left. Back to the main event - we ordered 1/2 dz crabs, crab mac and cheese, fish tacos, and hush puppies. The crabs were tasty and full. The mac was a tad spiced and chock full o crab. Fish tacos were good and crispy. Finally, the hush puppies were just sweet enough without being overly done. It's an interesting setup - benches and such. It's not romantic (what crabhouse is?), but it is fun and energetic.
