“Best carrot cake ever!”

Emmaus Village Carlton
Ranked #1 of 3 Restaurants in Carlton
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$5 - US$9
Description: At Emmaus Village Carlton we give people a home, meaningful work in one of our social enterprises and an opportunity to get themselves back on their feet. For many people who experience homelessness, one of the biggest obstacles they must overcome is a loss of self-esteem. Emmaus provides an opportunity to regain this, with a chance to make a real contribution to their community. Emmaus communities are not hostels for the homeless; we provide a home for as long as someone needs it. For many, this support and stability is like the family they don’t have, providing a safe environment in which to settle and re-build their lives. We collect and sell donated goods, using the money generated to sustain our community. We refurbish and upcycle items in our workshop and run a delivery, collection and house clearances services. Emmaus Village Carlton is based in the countryside village of Carlton in Bedfordshire. The retail space includes a Home Store, The Chapel and Em's Bistro. The community accommodation is also based on the same site. In Under 1 Roof, which is located near the 24-hour Donation Drop Off, all the donations are sorted before they are moved into the Home Store or Ems Bistro. In Ems Bistro you will also find our book store and bric-a-brac shop.

Lovely friendly staff. Clean tables. Great selection of cakes and the best carrot cake I have ever had!
Highly recommended.
Great to take your unwanted items to also to help those in need.

Emmaus are running an excellent centre in the small village of Carlton, Bedfordshire. Their cafe, secondhand books and bric-a-brac area are a delight. The cafe serves excellent cakes and snacks, which are very reasonably priced. (Vegetarians catered for). Great service with a smile. If you are looking for good quality second-hand furniture, look them up.

Waited 35 minutes for an overcooked thin fishcake, cold potatoes, defrosted carrots and broccoli it was awful. Hopefully the £17.00 I paid for both our meals will go towards improving the catering. No more visits to the Bistro for us, we used to enjoy eating here. What has gone wrong?

Although not the easiest of places to find, you get a Coffee Shop with good food, a Bookshop, and a 'bric a brac' shop all in one.
And you are helping homeless people to establish some self-worth and gain skills and work experience at the same time!
Service was very good and the staff were happy to have a chat while serving / delivering the food and coffees.
All food is made on the premises and the coffee was properly made with good beans.
They cater for walkers, cyclists and people in cars, with adequate interior and exterior seating.
Well worth a visit.

Most of the time it is really fantastic here, the staff are friendly and you can get a killer bacon and Brie sandwich. However when they had a roast dinner thing for Mother’s Day it was NOT good.
