Wonderful ride up from Denver. The "hosts", conductors, everyone were incredibly . The moffet tunnel is the end of the line, and Ta da there you are in the middle of everything, snow, skiers, shops and restaurants.

Over the years, I have stopped here several times. This year, I actually knew there was a train coming. I had a very hard time accessing the west portal, not even sure if I was supposed to be where I was to photograph a train. I know I wasn't on railroad property, but wasn't sure if it was public property either (it use to be). Anyway, I saw what I wanted to see, photographed it and left quickly. Not many trains operate on this line daily, so catching something is a pot of gold for a traveler, especially for a train-buff.

I have been coming to this train site since the 1960's. It is so utterly AMAZING to hear the heavy rubber curtains drop and the fans start up in the under mountain tunnel. By doing this, the tunnel is closed off and the fans in the tunnel can push fresh air in front of the train and get rid of the exhaust at the back of the train. The drop of the curtain announces that the train is entering at the other end of the tunnel and will be bursting out of the mountain in a few minutes as it completes its entry and exit from the tunnel. WOW. If you can call to see when a train is coming through, it would be perfect.

Winter Park/ Mary Jane ski areas are the only ski areas in North America serviced by train. This is the way to "see" the Moffat tunnel. Amtrak also goes through the tunnel from Denver or Fraser.

West Portal is a great history story but realistically, not much to see. On the other hand if you take the train you will be treated to incredible views and of course the ski resort is right there at West Portal. Good history and I understand the passenger service is expected this coming ski season which should be welcomed by the front range skiers.
