“Wonderful Alpine Scenary”
Review of Piedra River Trail

The drive to the trailhead is partly on paved and also dirt roads. When we went in June other than the dust it was no problem for a non four wheeler.
The hike itself is varied and scenary spectacular from rushing river to alpine meadows.
We saw several other hikers of all ages but it wasnt crowded, not a difficult hike but with a bit of a gain here and there plus 7000ft plus altitude is can be a little tireing. We turned around after about three miles.
Would recommend to anyone who enjoys nature.

This trail is just 16 miles north of town on Piedra Rd. It is an easy go, suitable for hikers of all ages. I would guess we passed folks in their 70s and young families with small kids and babies in packs. The river is rushing this time of year and the geology very interesting. It is 12 miles from trailhead to trailhead but you can turn around at any time. Wonderful scenery for a trail so accessible.

There was snow along the trail in March, but it wasn't anything that hiking poles and spikes couldn't help with. The scenery was beautiful and the frozen waterfalls were incredible. We didn't see another person on the trail the afternoon we were there.

Great hike into a rocky canyon right on the river. If you have dogs, they love to play in the river along the way!

Wandered out this way during a long weekend stay in Pagosa Springs. We wanted to do some light hiking and had pulled over to check out a cliff when we noticed this trail winding down through the hills.

We drove to the trailhead and hiked with my family and a couple of friends about 4 miles out and back.

Easy, fairly level trail leads through meadows, rock walls lined with wild roses, huge pine, and along the river. Wading is easy and we saw a family of river otters, and when we crossed the river to a sandy area there were footprints everywhere. Came across a porcupine that had somehow climbed a 70 foot cliff and made a home in a rock crevice.

The drive out was gorgeous and the hike was perfect, we had blue skies and puffy white clouds. Plenty of wildflowers in the meadows - it was incredibly picturesque. My whole family had fun, even my 8 year old daughter who is not the biggest fan of hiking. My teenaged boys wanted to hike out further.
