Durango is not a large city but the downtown is surprisingly large. I suppose it is such a popular tourist town that the many hotels, restaurants, and shops catering to visitors give it a huge feel. We found it nice just to stroll several blocks down one side and then cross the street and walk back. An art fair was one block away with exhibits for about three blocks. The most fun was just looking at the old architecture, much of which is late 19th century and trying to figure out where to eat and if we wanted to peek into shops. I sense that special days are frequent. The day we arrived in town there was an Octoberfest celebration going on which closed the main street for a few hours. A band was playing and lots of people were drinking beer. Yes, it is very commercial and I did prefer some other south western Colorado cities that seemed calmer. But Durango is a great city for visitors.
