Ok, let get something out of the way: if you're expecting some sort of typical American restaurant atmosphere, this place isn't for you. If you're one of those people who freak out at the idea of a "hole-in-the-wall" type of place, this place isn't for you. But if you're into authentic Chinese food in a typical Chinese food restaurant...you have come to the right place.

I love this place. Probably because I spent quite a few years living in Shanghai so now I miss that typical Chinese restaurant feel, but yeah, this place gets me. The server is nice, friendly and efficient. I find it comforting that it is never busy when I go there and you can find Chinese family just having a dinner there together.

Best deal if you're there with a few people and want to try something: go for the dinner deal. I think you get 3 dishes with rice for a set price and it's a pretty extensive menu to choose from.

Personal favorite dish of mine are the noodles. Just egg noodles, some bok choi, add in BBQ pork or duck and delicious broth, you can't go wrong. And for around $6, that's a steal and a half. Forget those stupid fancy yuppie places in Lohi (a certain ramen restaurant come to mind with a ridiculous wait time), this is what a bowl of noodles should be. Seriously, just go for the noodles!

Notes: so if you're not used to Chinese food, be wary of the BBQ duck. It has bones in it. I have seen way too many white friends struggle with this so I thought I should make a PSA. Also the beef noodles, if you are not use to having chunk of beef fat/tendon floating in your noodles, don't get it. It's quite...rich.

Hong Kong Barbecue is crazy good! The ambiance is stale and pretty much nonexistent otherwise, but the food and service more than make up for it.
There are traditional ducks and bbq which can be bought by the pound. We ordered two dishes from the poultry menu. My Kung pao chicken had a fabulous sauce and was nicely spiced.

Denver is a city with a great Asian food scene. Most people don't really know this. The south Federal area of the city is loaded with great Asian food. Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants abound. Hong Kong Barbecue is one such gem. it is a small place with no alcohol license. The food is fantastic. The specialty is the duck. The BBQ duck is as good as i have ever had, including New York and China. It is really succulent. They also put the duck in a dish with Tangerine peels that is outstanding. The rest of the Menu is also great. The wide noodle dishes are tasty and the fried rice is authentic and full of flavor. So if you are in Denver and looking for a small out of the way place, you can't beat Hong Kong BBQ. It is nothing fancy and is in a rather dreary strip mall, but the food is fabulous.
