After flying from Sydney to Cairns and driving for 2 hours direct from the airport to Mission Beach, we arrived a bit jaded after a full day of travelling....but this disappeared the moment we stepped into the Artist House and walked through to that magnificent beachfront view!
All the bi-fold windows and doors that front the beach open up to bring the outdoors inside and it felt like we were right on the beach - which is exactly where this house is located - absolute beachfront.
The two main bedrooms and ensuites have perfect views of the water. We particularly enjoyed opening up the bedroom bifolds in the morning, breathing in that fresh ocean air with our morning tea. The ensuites are well designed with good quality towels and toiletries and the walk in robes offered plenty of storage space.
The kitchen is the best that we have experienced for holiday rentals - good choice of cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils; all the kitchen tools worked and paper towels, foil and glad wrap were provided! Pantry was well stocked with the basics to get you started...salt, pepper, herbs, spices and other condiments; milk and water in the fridge; insect repellent, burners and matches...I've probably missed a few things but I suggest it's worth checking what's already there before you do your grocery shopping. The pantry was certainly geared up for people like us that flew into Cairns with only a suitcase of clothing.
With regard to grocery shopping...Woolworths is an easy 5 minute drive away. Just keep in mind that they close on Sundays - when you'll have to drive to main Mission Beach to shop.
The Tully sugar mill is worth a look during crushing season (June to November). Tully is about 25 kms drive south and the mill offers tours for adults ($20) and kids over 7 yrs ($13) of 2 hours duration. Note that bookings are essential - check their website.
For dining we can recommend Millers beach bar and grill for dinner - just 3 minutes drive up the road...but they also have a free shuttle bus for pick up and drop off - in case you want to enjoy a few drinks.
We also enjoyed the alfresco dining at the Castaway resort on Mission Beach - good seafood and varied menu.
To be honest, we didn't do much in Mission beach as we were very happy to just relax and enjoy our private oasis on the beach.
I've noticed that the Trip Advisor description of amenities indicates that the pool is 'shared'. This is not the case - it is a large plunge pool that looks out onto the beach for house residents only. We also didn't see any local artwork in the house - as mentioned in the property description.
So any suggestions/criticisms? Another day bed or lounge on the deck would have been perfect!
