I've been to Matos Cheese Factory several times and it is the BEST Cheese I've ever had. So creamy and unique and perfect. When we are anywhere near that part of California we make it a point to include it in our travel plans. We also had them mail us a wheel once because we just couldn't live without it! Definitely try Matos Cheese if you're in the area. Obrigada!

A while back a friend had visited this establishment and, knowing that I am Portuguese, bought some cheese for us from the Matos Cheese Factory. We had decided that the next time we were in Santa Rosa we would visit it. We bought some of their aged cheese which is like nothing you will find the your regular stores. It was indeed deliciously different. The surroundings give you the feeling that you have traveled back in time. I had the occasion to speak with the owner in our native language. Joe makes his cheese from milk of his own cows. If you are ever in the area, I would highly recommend that you stop by.

I didn't know what to expect when we decided to visit the Matos cheese factory, having never tasted Portuguese cheese before, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to Sonoma County. You drive down a farm track between fields of cows, pulling into the barn yard, replete with barn cat.. the shop is a tiny little place, leading straight into the cheese wheel storage room with a young lady running the whole thing was so helpful and friendly - she made the experience all the better. As for the cheese - there are just 2 types but they are both SO fabulous! We meant to bring our purchases home, but half of it got eaten in the car because our kids couldn't stop opening each package! A lovely surprise and a very real farm experience! Don't forget to bring a cooler box of you're traveling for a long time...

The other TA reviews accurately describe the 'cheese factory': working farm, dirt road, cows about (and cow doings!), tractors, and the cheese shop around the back by the barn. The St Jorge cheese is worth the trip, original or aged. Combine with a winery visit or two for a fun day.

They make two versions of the same cheese. One is aged 3 months and one is aged 8 months. They cost $9 and $13 per pound respectively. This is a great buy for some very tasty cheese. I would definitely recommend stopping buy and buying their cheese.
