I've been on steam trains here in the UK but this was a first in an open carriage and up a mountain. You can experience the journey with all your senses

Great commentary.

Decent food after the trip at a reasonable price.

Loved it

Love a train and we tried both routes. Firstly from Felton to Santa Cruz and back. 3 hr round trip amazing to go along the boardwalk of Santa Cruz on such a big train. Then back for trip up the mountain on open train pulled by a steam engine. A quick stretch at the top and back down on the train. If u love trains it’s great. If not maybe one or other trip

Our whole family took this trip one afternoon to see the redwood trees. I enjoyed the ride on a steam engine and the explanation of how it worked and the history of how this railroad came to be built. Then there was the beauty of the majestic redwood trees. It was a fun ride for our grandchildren. There was a small western town as you walked to the train. It was a chance to spend a relaxing afternoon together enjoying the beauty and history of the area.

If you're expecting a rah rah sis boom bah experience, get ready to be disappointed. Instead, consider this a time to slow down and enjoy the scenic redwoods on a steam ride up a mountain. Steady and not speedy, you'll be navigated through some very majestic trees. With a brief stop at the top for pictures and potty break.

Keep these things in mind:
--get there early-at least 20 minutes before your ride. Traffic and parking can be chaotic if RCR has any events going on.
--wear a hat and sunscreen if it's warm.
--bring water!! Buying there is $$$.
--this is an adventure really designed for families. If you don't like being around little kids with runny noses and snacks, you may not enjoy this excursion.
--the box cars (all but 2), are open...and it's a tight squeeze to get everyone on board. Be prepared to have visitors invade your personal space bubble as you ride.
--the trip is slow. If your child gets bored easily and can't sit still, you may have a struggle on your hands. Round trip is a bit more than an hour.
--have fun! The train "guides" have great stories and plenty of info about these trees and the history of the place. We loved it!

Have fun!
