The hotel is very central, being half way up State Street, 10 minutes walk from Stearns Wharf and close to many bars and restaurants. The reception area was spacious and well-appointed with comfortable chairs and relaxing music. Our room, however, was very small and in need of updating. I enquired at reception about hiring a wheelchair for my husband who was struggling to walk after a recent illness, but all they were prepared to do was print off details of 2 companies, one of which was nowhere near Santa Barbara and would have charges hundreds of dollars to deliver. I was able to do better myself by looking up companies on the internet myself, although wasn't able to acquire one at short notice (we were not aware we were going to need one, otherwise I would have organised this before our trip). The reception staff didn't come back to me to see if I had been successful and I had the impression they really couldn't have cared less. The breakfasts were fine, again accompanied by relaxing music. There was no bar, but this was no problem due to the close proximity of bars etc. However, the hotel details stated there was coffee, tea and fruit juices available in the reception area all day. This did not prove to be the case. Generally an OK hotel but really could do better.

Beautiful hotel. Staff were all very friendly. Rooms clean and comfortable beds. All in the heart of Santa Barbara. Breakfast was adequate to get us going for the day. We also had a car and the valet parking was very easy. Highly recommend.

We’d stayed in Santa Barbara before, at two other hotels, but this was our first stay at the Santa Barbara Hotel.

What a find. It’s the best located hotel in Santa Barbara’s main street. The rooms are typically small, very clean, well maintained, nicely decorated and uplifting. Nothing comes cheap in Santa Barbara so at $199 USD FOR a Queen bed room, it was good value.

Breakfast is thrown in for free and to be honest, it’s so basic, we wouldn’t have paid for if required. Tea, coffee, oats (sugary), cereal, yoghurt, Danish parties, whole apples & pears, one or two bananaswere provided over the 4 days we stayed. Not ideally located either in the foyer/ corridor. But we figured it was good of them to have a go, and let’s face it- Americans do breakfast quite differently to Aussies. The whole stay was so good, we didn’t worry about breakfast.

Before arriving, We’d read so much about the hotel elevator, a lot of it negative, that we were worried about what we were going to find. Needn’t have worried. The elevator was old but very well maintained and quite fun.

Valet service was good too with parking out the back.

Having passed on the previous two hotels we’d stayed at in Santa Barbara, will definitely stay here next time.

We were quite disappointed with this hotel. Perhaps we expected too much for almost £200 for 1 night in Santa Barbara. The hotel was nice and the bedroom was a reasonable size but we expected more for the money. The best thing about the hotel was the location. It was also very clean.
Breakfast was served in the entrance to the hotel and a vagrant walked in and filled a large coffee cup he had brought in. A member of staff had to nudge him away from the breakfast area and ask him to leave the hotel. This was right next to where we were sitting. There must be another area that breakfast could be served. The orange juice wasn't great and was served in disposable plastic cups. The coffee was ok but was served in paper cups. There wasn't much on offer for eating. The little waffle machine was good but there wasn't a great selection for breakfast.
There was water in the bedroom (a bottle each) and that was appreciated.
There are no facilities at the hotel and we were disappointed to be charged $15 to park. It was a bizarre system where you are directed to park in one space and then the car is moved by a valet to another space approx 8 feet away. There are only around 12 spaces in the carpark so it seems like a needless process.
We would possibly stay at the hotel again if we got a good deal but would not stay again at a cost of almost £200.
Staff were friendly and helpful.

Room tip: No rooms would have much of a view because of location.

Hi Parklea,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, we appreciate hearing from our guests to help us improve our overall experience. We are happy to hear that you found our staff friendly and helpful.

We can see how you would be confused by our valet parking, but we actually have an offsite lot right across the street where we also park cars in addition to the small onsite lot directly behind the hotel.

I will note that our rates do fluctuate throughout the year and if you were interested in visiting again I would recommend coming during the months of November and December. It is a beautiful time of year here. Next time you come please call us directly. Booking directly with the hotel will also mean you are getting the best rate. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Thank You,

The Hotel of Santa Barbara kept its original beauty and yet provides a modern service and comfortable feel. The only thing that reminded us it was an antique building was the elevator, which you would have to push a button to open the door, then slide the fold-able door in order to get in. Our room is facing the State street, but it was very quiet and comfy at night. The location is perfect, we could walk to all the major attractions we planned to visit. The breakfast was so good, everything was fresh and delicious. The staff including the valet parking attendant were all very friendly and helpful.
PS. If you would have time while visiting Santa Barbara, please visit the Courthouse. It is a gem.

Room tip: Our room was facing the State, but it was surprisingly quiet.

Dear J and J,
Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed our historic charm and modern features, including our breakfast (the pastries are from local patisserie Renaud's and they are the best croissants in town.) We look forward to welcoming you back to Hotel Santa Barbara in the near future!

And we agree, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse is a beautiful place to visit during a stay in Santa Barbara.
