Okay. Have to tell the truth. I'm getting old. Graduated from UCSB quite a long time ago. Back then, this place was a flea bag hotel in a not very nice section of State Street. In fact, one of the black and white photos lining our room's corridor was taken a few years before I started at UCSB showed rooms at $4.00 a night.

But that was back then. Today, the relatively small hotel was absolutely lovely. The room was charming and comfortable. And maybe impossible for you to believe: our king room looked EXACTLY like the photo on the website. When does that ever happen?

So, why did we rate it at only four stars? The breakfast was LaQunita-ish and with less seating. But the location is now terrific with nice restaurants, shops, and both a British and Irish pub on the block. Comparing Hotel Santa Barbara to others of its category, we found it superlative.

Room Tip: Our room (#201) was adjacent to the elevator and we were able to hear it, albeit softly.

First tip: do not go there. If you must, avoid rooms next to the elevator since almost the whole building can hear that people are using it.

Even if you avoid those rooms bring earplugs because the fridge (dated from the 60's) will make more noise than a mustang. Similarly the air condition.

Since most likely you will not be able to sleep, go to buy your own bread somewhere because the breakfast in this place is just awful.

The only positive thing is the people who work there who were polite.

And I forgot, prepare yourself to pay 200 $US for that experience.

We love guest comments and appreciate your feedback! We’re happy to hear you enjoyed our guest service and will pass on the compliment to our staff. Our historic elevator gets many comments – some love it and some don’t, and we’re sorry noise from the elevator disrupted your stay. We’re surprised to hear that the refrigerator bothered you as well (all are new by the way) and will check it out as this is a comment we have not heard. Our complimentary continental breakfast with fresh baked pastries, waffles, yogurts, cereals, eggs, etc. is usually very popular, and we are sorry it didn’t meet your expectations. We would love an opportunity to provide a trouble-free visit and hope you’ll contact me directly if you do decide to return. All the best for the New Year. terickson@hotelsantabarbara.com

It was a pleasant stay at the hotel. Staff were polite and friendly. Room was small about 240 square feet. However, it had comfortable bed, desk with chair, very small table and chair, and night stand. Everything was small but nice, and clean. Location is great near shopping walking mall, and historic buildings.

Room Tip: Very quiet hotel we were on the top floor. They should explain how the elevator works as it is an older model.

It has the feel of a beautiful Hotel from the 1930's era. Yet has pretty much all the new technology updates for WIFI and computer. The renovations are very well done, and
don't take away from History or Character of the hotel.

Hotel Santa Barbara is one of those long standing, family owned hotels that keeps the customer first in every situation. They have wonderful rooms, dedicated and polite staff and a great location in the downtown area, but also close to the beach. Love it!
