The soups are good, always Caldo De Res and the Albondigas , Pozole. And the homemade corn tortillas, mmmmm

This is a little place that is a throw back to the old diners-oilcloth tablecloths, sombreros hanging on a brick wall, formica tables and linoleum floor. Enter through the banged-up screen-door. The waitress seemed to know everyone. Chips and 2 kinds of salsa came out first while we read the menu.
There are daily specials for $5.95, including the beans and rice. They had the standard Mexican dishes for breakfast and lunch. We had the chile rellano and chimichanga ala carte at $4-$5 each. Entree size would include beans and rice.
The chile rellano was delicious-not too much batter, great sauce and lots of mild cheese. The chimichanga came with shredded lettuce, sour cream and guacamole. Both were not greasy and very, very good. We would definitely go back there.

Ordered a chile verde burrito, meat was dry and it was not well cooked. The rice was undercooked and the beans were hard. Not returning ever.

If you really want Mexican food in San Jose forget about Chipotle and those franchises.

La peñita is a real mexican restaurant the food tastes like if you were in a house down in Mexico.

Everything you try will fulfill your expectations and the attention you get there is good.

Deserves the try (for those who think a real Mexican place won't take cards they accept Visa and Mastercard).

SO glad to find La Penita - we just had breakfast there and it was delicious! Tasty chips and two kinds of salsa to start, then chilaquilles with fried eggs for me and chorizo & eggs (with fresh, house-made tortillas) for my husband. The service was good, the ambiance pleasant and a great experience all around. We will be back!
