Cafe Rae is in a little row of stores on El Camino Real toward the north end of San Clemente, sandwiched between a bike shop and a lighting store. You won't miss it, though, because the sign is a tie-dyed visual cue of what's inside.
The tiny interior is a colorful part-retail-clothing-store-part-breakfast/lunch place. Although the colorful tie-dyed clothes are nice, the food is the main attraction.
Standard breakfast fare is something more than that. Lots of foods that you'll feel good about eating are available. Whole grain breads, granola, chicken sausage, fresh fruit...even the pancakes and French toast are wholesome. The coffee is very good.
I've had no problems with service. On one visit I had to be in and out quickly. I told my server this and she was very accommodating. However, the pace is usually geared more toward leisurely.
This may be a tough place to bring small children. It is quite small and the tables very close together. Any antics are bound to disrupt the dining room. Tweens and teens might appreciate it, though, for the boho atmosphere.
Price is more than you will pay at Denny's or the IHOP, as another reviewer noted, but you'll be paying for the quality of the food
