Owner description: In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. In 1938, he traveled to France and returned with André Tchelistcheff, the famed viticulturist and innovative enologist. Tchelistcheff introduced cold fermentation for white wines, malolactic fermentation for reds and aging red wines in small, French oak barrels. He also insisted that the de Latour family's private Cabernet wine-"Private Reserve"-be bottled and sold as the winery's flagship offering. The result was the inaugural 1936 vintage of the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley's first "cult" Cabernet. Today we continue to innovate to craft wines in our bold, classic style. We have become a leader in clonal research, and our BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently we completed a new state-of-the-art winery within one of our original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet.

“The Reserve Room is the best place to go”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

My husband and I went here for the second time in four years. We will keep going back anytime we are in Napa Valley. We only go to the Reserve Room so I can't comment on the other tasting room. In the Reserve Room you can taste and buy BV's higher end wines. It is also nicer and quieter than the other tasting room, but you will pay more. On this last visit, I didn't enjoy our host as much as I had in the past but the wine was still good. That's all subjective any way. There are some good deals on wine here. For example, you can buy a three-bottle vertical series of Tapestry for the same price as two bottles of the current vintage of Tapestry. If you get hungry, Rutherford Grill is right next door.

“Great Napa History and Wine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2012

Mid valley winery with a great history of Napa Valley Winemaking. Wines are excellent. Can be crowded. Look for 2 for 1 coupons in local magazines.

“Save your money, pick a different winery!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2012

I have been wanting to stop here for years. Will not go back. Very confusing when you enter, we paid first, then saw others paying after. We found a spot at the crowded tasting . The gentleman that started or tasting was very involved with a Spanish speaking couple and we had a hard time getting his attention after the first pour. He then left with them, presumably to help sell some wine. After waitingagood 10 minutes for him to return, weasked the woman behind the bar who was having fun with a few other tasters if she could help us. She refused saying that he would be back soon. When he finally returned the woman told him that we were upset that he left us and laughed. We had not made a scene, but she made a big deal out of it. At this point I was feeling uncomfortable so we thanked him and went to pick up the wine we wanted to buy. Took it to the same register we had paid for our tasting at and she tried to charge us again for the tasting. Same woman that had just sold us the tasting. On our way out we were greeted as if we were just coming in and offered a glass by three same person that had greeted us when we did come in! Horrible customer service! Will not go back, not recommend. Too many nice, friendly wineries to waste time here.

“Uppity and rude--keep driving past this place!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

During our most recent trip to Sonoma and Napa Valley, we swung by the BV winery because my mom really likes BV wine. Since I was the driver, I didn't want to drink at all and my sister doesn't drink wine, my mom was reluctant to do the tasting. Once we got to the main tasting room, we were offered a sample of wine and that was the end of the graciousness of the winery employees. We trekked through some treacherous roads to get to the winery from Sonoma and insisted that my mom get wine to make our trip worthwhile. No one offered to explain the wine or even acknowledge us just because we didn't want to do a full tasting. The kicker was the curmudgeon of a lady who was bad mouthing a fellow co-worker aloud and being extremely condescending to my mom when she asked a simple question about one of the wine shipping sleeves. Never again!

“Very nice hosts - fun atmosphere”

A really lively and fun place to taste wine, especially when you're waiting for a table at Rutherford Grill. Pourers are very nice and generous with portions and tastings.
