This is where we go for Mexican food now. It's not wonderful, meaning it's not fancy and it's basic. But the food is good. It's always hot. It's very reasonable priced. It's local. Locals eat here. Lots of local Hispanic people eat here. Good, basic Mexican food. And a huge menu, so you will very likely find what you want. And you can have your pup on the patio too which is really cool on a warm evening.

El Carnival is part of the best Mexican food restaurants in Northern California. The Al Pastor anything is so flavorful and the Seafood Soup is amazing. We moved from Nor Cal about 10 years and this is this is the place I miss the most for great Mexican food. Not in Placerville...hit up La Fiesta Taqueria in Folsom or Mid-town Sac. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

We travel extensively in Central and South America. The meal we had here was by far the BEST Mexican dish we have ever had !!!!!
Although there is the typical rice and beans ,YOU HAVE TO TRY the Molacajete. The best way to describe this is a Mexican stew. It is served in a mortar made of volcanic rock. In it you will find, beef steak, crab, shrimp, cheese, cactus and chicken. It is served in a rich, complex broth that is spicy and sweet at the same time ! We had one and it fed two light eaters.
There is easy access from Highway 50 on your way to or from Lake Tahoe.
The restaurant is SPOTLESSLY clean . They are open daily until 10:00 P.M..
It is run by a group of friends from Jalisco, Mexico.
The filled churros compliment the meal for dessert, but we wanted to savor the flavors ,just a little longer !!!

Arrived for late lunch on a weekday.

What we liked:

1. Large menu--something for everyone.
2. Clean, well-lit interior.
3. Reasonable prices.
4. Food served on a hot platter, not foam or paper (even though you order and then go sit down and wait).
5. Free refills on self-serve soda.
6. They give you four (four!) warm ortillas on the side when you order some main dishes.
7. Friendly, fast service.

What we didn't like:

1. They serve a good beer selection but have nothing for wine drinkers.
2. Soupy refried beans with odd texture and even odder color.
3. Chili verde--the meat was dry on top as if it had been exposed to the air too long. Chili verde is supposed to be fork tender.
4. Blah tasting rice.

Would we return? No. Placerville has many other places that serve decent Mexican food.
