They've changed the Chocolate Garage. The sampling space is larger but there are no longer trays of various kinds of chocolate to sample. Apparently, freeloaders were eating them out of house and home. Now, if you're a non-member, you put down $5.00 and get to sample four different chocolates, then, if you buy additional chocolate, you're bill is discounted by $5.00, is how it was explained to me. The selection of high-end product seems greater than during our last trip. It's still a great tasting experience.

This place opened my eyes to the growing trend in craft chocolate. We were visiting family in Menlo Park who took us to the Palo Alto farmer’s market on a Saturday morning. Since getting home I looked up a few web sites on the topic. The concept of small batch chocolate with a fair trade angle is intriguing. In the garage, we got to try four different kinds of chocolate, some of which was already sold out by the time we got there. There was a steady stream of people without feeling overcrowded. We ended up buying a bar of Dick Taylor chocolate as a gift. If you’re looking for something unique, check this out!

The Chocolate Garage is located in a tiny converted garage nestled in an alley in downtown Palo Alto across the street from the Farmers' Market. All they sell is high cacao chocolate from some of the best chocolatiers in the world. Our son is a hard-core chocoholic and had hooked our grand daughter as well. Naturally, we get to visit the Chocolate Garage regularly during our sojorns in Palo Alto. This is a great opportunity to discuss and sample a selection of first-class chocolates. It's not cheap but it's certainly worth it. Just ask Amelia !

The Chocolate Garage isn't a regular retail store: its regular hours are strange but it's worth the effort to go there on Saturday mornings or Wednesdays after work. The selection is amazing and their knowledge of chocolate is comprehensive! If their regular hours don't work for you, arrange a chocolate tasting at your home or delivery to your work.

They specialize in sustainably grown products from all over the world. We've all heard of chocolate with bacon. What about chocolate with salt & pepper? How about adding some cinnamon or licorice? Chili pepper? It's all there and you will enjoy it because the flavors all enhance the quality of the chocolate.

While you are enjoying the samples, learn about how chocolate is grown and prepared in small communities around the world.
