Description: Tamarine is a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant that features the light but flavor-intensive culinary delicacies of Vietnam. The restaurant offers a menu based on small plates, promoting the Vietnamese tradition of the 'shared' meal in which food is shared and enjoyed with those close. Tamarine's small plate entrees are enjoyed with the pairing of a variety of aromatic, flavor infused rice, designed to be mixed and matched to create a truly unique flavor experience. Along with culinary delicacies of Vietnam, the restaurant showcases the works of emerging artists from Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.

Every time we visit our 96 year old relative in Palo Alto I look forward to visiting Tamarine as the food is always good and service engaging and pleasant. However, our visit yesterday while the food was still good, the service was awful. It began with the rude and unobservant hostess and continued with the sloppy and lazy waiter. The afore mentioned 96 year old uses a walker and while she might look only 91 she does present as older and frail. We entered Tamarine about the same time as another family who just beat us to the door and the hostess stand. However when we entered there was no hostess. Thus, when the hostess finally appeared she had no clue who was there first but choose to seat the other family first even though it was clearly evident our 96 year old needed a seat. Ok - they beat us in the door but I was annoyed that the hostess did not ask who arrived first or look to see who had the greater need. When the hostess finally got back from seating the other family she immediately took a phone call. She shoved her hand in our faces and asked us to wait. Then she proceeded to speak on the phone for another couple of minutes. Finally finally we were seated. We ordered - good. While I can understand how they did not bring us one of the dishes we ordered, and while we were seated before at least two tables I could see we got our food after them, what I do not understand for a restaurant of this caliber and pricing is their serving us tea. Our party of 4 each ordered hot tea and after about 10 minutes of waiting these charming individual pots of water appear and the waiter throws tea bags on the table. Presentation bad. But when we put the teabags in the water we discovered the water was cold- not even tepid. Once we are able to finally flag down a waiter it took a while for tea pots with actual hot water to arrive and then we had to flag him down again to get him to remove the tea cups with the cold water. No apologies or explanation. We left Tamarine wondering if their service was deliberately bad. Age discrimination or just bad service or both?

This ambiance, wait staff and Pacific Rim cuisine is superb! The shaking beef and seafood dishes are a star.

I had been to lunch at this restaurant twice and wanted my stepson to try it for his birthday dinner. It did not disappoint, except that theTequila Mockingbird cocktail is no longer on the menu. The service is excellent and it is pricy but worth it. I recommend especially the shaking beef, the papaya salad, the sea bass, and the empress rice is very interesting.

We have been eating at Tamarine for years now. Consistently great delicious food. Service is always great. Ambiance is lovely. We really like the shaking beef and the sea bass...my absolute favorite is papaya salad and the eggplant dish.
