These canyons can be hikes by almost anyone. The walls are sediment, so don't expect to be climbing. There are many winding pathways, open areas to walk, lizards owls and other wildlife. It is very difficult to access, small cars may have some difficulty but take your time and you should be OK. No washrooms so take tp. A nice afternoon without any crowds.

Start out and take the first left into a narrow canyon then there's about 6 ladders that you have to climb up to get to the top..Better to go up the ladder than down (we thought anyway). Its not marked all that good.we had a map we printed off from the internet. It was very helpful.. There were 12 cars there or so , so you can ask people along the way .. There's more than 1 trail so it's a little confusing some places...It's great though. We went for about 4 hr round trip..

Located between Indionand El Centro is hard to find Painted Canyon. This is a great place located directly on the San Andreas earthquake fault. Awesome hike with elevated views of the Salton Sea. CAUTION...there are ladders to climb in-between some of the slot canyons and some of the ladders have been removed, making the climb impossible. Further, there have been a rash of car burglaries while people are hiking, so leave your valuables somewhere else as the parking area is far awaynfrom the climb. Youmwil need to wash your car when youmleavenhere....just an awesome place.

This hike had minimal signs, rickety ladders, and beautiful views. Go with at least one other person, and check the weather. It's maintained minimally, and at times, it's hard to tell what the actual trail is. Just get to the ridge line and enjoy the journey! Wear good shoes,as part of the hike is on soft fine sand and gravel. You will have sore ankles the next day!
