“We love Oakland Chinatown”

This is not a petting zoo Chinatown this is where the real stuff happens. The markets are full of fresh vegetables and fruits, meats and fishes. If you are like us, much you see may be unfamiliar. And there is Tao Yuen, the excellent and very inexpensive take away shop. It has hot dim sum and various noodle and stir fry dihes as well as cold dim sum to take away and steam at home. Heaven.

“Not bad, but nothing like SF's Chinatown”
Reviewed 5 January 2012

I've been here countless number of times, and given the close proximity to its neighboring city across the bay, Oakland's Chinatown is not bad when it comes to diversity in restaurants and shops.

You will have no problem finding gifts and souvenirs, pharmacies, restaurants serving Hong Kong style cafe fare, dim sum, and sweet dessert drinks (boba, slushies, etc.), even herbal stores. The way it is laid out though makes it a little more inconvenient to navigate around on foot, compared to SF's Chinatown. However, given that where I live there isn't a real discernable Chinatown, this is still good.

I wouldn't recommend coming here after the sun goes down, as there are quite a few questionable people that float around here. All in all, a much more spread out Chinatown with more room to roam. Parking isn't too hard to find in the numerous garages (rates are not too bad) and along the street.

“Good Chinese Food”
Reviewed 31 December 2011

This is the place I go when I want to get good Chinese food; not in those big fancy restaurants, but in those small mom and pop restaurants, the so-called greasy spoons.

“Authentic”
Reviewed 18 December 2011

Green ice cream, a man playing an ancient Chinese string instrument, lots and lots of women and men with their pink plastic grocery bags and hundreds of delicacies all around you. It's large enough yet small enough to get around and really enjoy it. A great education for your children and adults alike and the food is exquisite from traditional chinese to vietnamese, korean, etc.
