The Venue is tiny yet has a very cool vibe. The bar has a 45 degree slant because of the earthquake. Every item in the bar has a story. Great place to spend a hour having a conversation about Oakland's history

I love coming to this spot. I love the historic nature of the bar and all the cool things inside. Watch your step though cause the floor is a little slanted. The beers are really great and the bartenders are even better. On warm days, it is so great to sit outside and have drinks with friends. I hope they get their patio space back as the weather warms up.

We were in Oakland in the rain, so we stepped into the Saloon. The floor is uneven and slanted. The room is tiny, and the bar is original from the 1800's. Sitting down with an Irish coffee in this place is like traveling back in time. This is a totally unique experience...

This bar truly is as good as it gets. The bartenders are the best and most colorful you could ever ask for, the drinks are stiff and reasonably priced, the decor is fun and keeps your eyes and brain busy, and the entire place just oozes history. Jack London loved to drink and write here. Take that, bearded faux-hemians! But take it with you on your fixie and peddle off somewhere else, like Van Cleefs, thanks.

This bar has been running continuously since 1883. DANG! Imagine all the lives and incredible stories that have come through these walls and it just boggles the mind. It feels good to drink here. It really does.

This is where all of us Santarchy people meet up every year before getting into our shenanigans. Heinold's has always welcomed us with open arms and lots of Santa loving. That in itself is good enough for me. But even without being East Bay Santacon ground zero, Heinold's is one of a kind. You will never find a bar of this sort anywhere in the US because, well, there just isn't one.

This place is the real McCoy. Believe the hyperbole. Jack did.

Being a long time Bay Area native, I am embarrassed to say I had never been here before today. A colleague of mine and I decided to end our work day early today and head there for a beer. What an amazing historical find. The place is packed full of mementos, pictures and history and the fact that the bar downward slants so much you feel like you have to hold onto your beer is hysterical. Certainly there is a reason for tourists to pack this place, but it felt like a neighborhood bar - at least on a early Friday afternoon. What a great history and the female owner who frequents the place was sweet as she asked the bartender for bird seed and doggie treats to satisfy the ducks and doggies who visited on the patio. A must see and stop if you are in Jack London Square.
