The Daw Yee Cafe is a bit off the beaten path located on a side street in Monterey Park. We like trying ethnic food that we can't find at home and we're glad to have found the Daw Yee Cafe.

Not being familiar with Burmese food, I would describe it as a little Indian and a little Thai. The food is flavorful but not served overly spicy. We started with the Tea Leaf salad which was a delicious combination of peanuts, fermented tea leaves, tomatoes, roasted garlic and a few other items. Mixed all up, the salad was an enjoyable mix of greens and crunchy. We enjoyed the Platha bread (similar to Naan) and some noodle and stew-like dishes.

The restaurant is simple and clean with easy parking. Service was pleasant.

The tea leaf salad (vegan style) is soooo delicious! We thought nothing could compare to the deliciousness of the one we had in Northern CA but wow - this one was pretty perfect. Great service as well, our server was so kind and gave great recommendations. She knew we were in a hurry and brought our food quickly, packed our to-go orders beautifully and everything was just fantastic from beginning to end. Good location with plenty of free parking - we will definitely be regulars at this location!

2837 W. Sunset Blvd, small place, small parking lot. Missed it 1st time, had to drive around & found the last parking spot. Only 1 waiter when we got there. Food was good - love the tea leaves salad, fried tofu & goat stew. 6 of us shared 6 dishes plus desserts. Total bill $74 + tips.

It's rare to find good Burmese (now known as Myanmar) food in Southern California. When I find one they don't stay long in the business, maybe people are not aware of the type of food. If you love Thai food, then you will enjoy Myanmar cuisine because they are similar, especially deserts are similar to Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian or even Indian with their own twist with ingredients. If you want to explore, try the typical Myanmar Specialty that you find in just about every street, hotels, restaurants in Myanmar, Mohinga soup made with fish and serve with thin rice noodle or Ohnoh Khao Shwe soup made with chicken/coconut serve with egg noodle. The place is small but you will find real authentic food there. A lot of dishes are time consuming to prepare so I frequent this place quite often.

So if you've been to Monterey Park and driven down Garvey, you probably passed by the Myanmar restaurant on Garvey/Orange next to the infamous Club 21. This review isn't about that place, this is the review for the much better tasting Daw Yee Myanmar Cafe that is literally one block away. The food is delicious if you're into trying exotic asian cuisine. The location is small and welcoming and the staff is friendly. I've been there a few times with my wife and we both enjoyed it. Love the Grass Jelly Lemonade.
