Review of Boardwalk Sub Shop

Boardwalk Sub Shop
Ranked #75 of 318 Restaurants in Monterey
Price range: US$11 - US$15
Description: When four brothers grew up in the hotel and restaurant business in Atlantic City, each of them learned a different specialty from the business. Teplitzky’s Hotel and restaurant was a favorite amongst tourist in the fifties, sixties and seventies and the boys all enjoyed their summers at the resort working and enjoying the beaches. However, they had one thing in common, “we knew how to eat” says chef Terry Teplitzky. “When we would all get together, no matter what the occasion was, enjoying subs was at the center of the table,” says JT, the youngest of the brothers. Such was often the case when the brothers would return to Atlantic City to visit. In 2014 when their mother and elder brother passed away within a few months of each other, Terry, Howard and JT knew they had to make progress on their life long dream of opening their own sub shop. Terry has called Monterey his home for 35 years and felt it was the perfect place to bring a piece of the east coast. In the years since leaving AC, Terry became a well-known chef as owner of Michael’s Catering and Wild Thyme Delicatessen. Although the other brothers pursued careers in the casino industry in Connecticut and California, they never forgot the cuisine that they grew up with. The three remaining brothers started Boardwalk Subs from an idea that had been spoken about for years before their brother Victor passed away. They decided at his funeral that it was time to make their dream a reality. Bringing their passion for and the memories of the east coast, the restaurant is an ode to their colorful family history. Throughout the sub shop, you’ll notice icons from Atlantic City, like the diving horse mural representing the popular attraction at the Steel Pier, James Saltwater Taffy that the Teplitzky boys grew up on and various antique photographs commemorating the times when Atlantic City was flourishing. Ask anyone on the east coast and they’ll tell you the key to a good sub is “in the bread.” The brothers have spent the last few months working with a local bread company to come up with the perfect recipe comparable to the east coast roll. Each sub is made with the freshest, local ingredients and prepared right in front of you. We’ll leave it up to your taste buds to test it out! Terry, Howard and JT couldn’t be more excited to share their passion for food, their family history and the city that saw them grow with you at Boardwalk Subs.

The family was too tired to go out after a long day out. We ordered online & got delivery to our motel. The delivery service was fast & the food still hot even the fries. The subs were huge & yummy.. favorites were the philly steak sub , the meatball sub and the garlic fries. Definitely would go back & would love to try eat in & some more of their menu.

This place is overpriced when you're paying for a boring sandwich with plain bread, iceberg lettuce and some meat. When I asked for Coke specifically, they didn't inform me that it was homemade soda that tasted like sugary, flat Coke. Paid $28 for two sandwiches and a drink. You're better off at Subway

Excellent calzones and Jersey Cheesestake. Relaxed atmosphere and kids enjoyed the taffy. Recommended.

This was my second experience eating food. The first one was work related and was great also. The service was great, the food was fantastic AND I WILL GO BACK (the BEST compliment)

My daughter and I were totally impressed with how friendly the cashier (owner?) and (in particular) the waitperson (who described herself as the owner's girlfriend) were on our recent visit. They went out of their way to describe the food and beverage selections. We ordered cheesesteak sandwiches, mine with fried onions. Given the sandwich cost over $10, I had high expectations. My daughter had a house-made cola and I enjoyed a beer (there are several varieties on tap).

The cola (and all of their sodas) was in-house-made with cane sugar; it tasted to us like a cross between Coke and Pepsi, but the real sugar made it stand out in a positive way.

There were many varieties of fries there; we considered ordering some, but were afraid it'd be too much food (we were thinking the sandwiches would be larger).

The cheesesteak sandwiches looked beautiful in their fresh rolls. My daughter enjoyed hers and said it wasn't too salty, while mine had way too much garlic salt. I didn't complain...but it was difficult to finish the sandwich because of this. Given this experience, I'd suggest you ask for minimal or no salt on anything you order so you can add it to taste.

We liked the industrial atmosphere and stainless steel tables in this place, and would consider returning if in the Monterey area. We were really impressed by the hospitality!
