“Great value!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 March 2012

We enjoyed our return visit to the Victorian Inn, having stayed here several years ago. As others have noted, the location is very good for walking to the Aquarium or to the Municipal Pier. Our room was clean and spacious (though the bathroom was a little outdated), the breakfast options were quite satisfactory, the staff were friendly and accommodating, and the hospitality hour was a great bonus. Our senior-rate room was upgraded at no extra cost, probably because of our mid-week stay. We definitely will book here on return trips to Monterey.

We found the premises lovely--not perfect--but warm, comfortable and very quaint. Room was clean and the fireplace was wonderful. We opted for a garden view and found it just fine. The staff were great--very friendly and helpful and the reception area in the Victorian house was beautifully done. We really enjoyed the wine & cheese in the evenings and breakfast was a notch above normal. It was a very short walk down to the waterfront and all the restaurants--of which the staff volunteered to make suggestions and reservations. We appreciate that most BW properties have fridges/coffee makers and free internet

Room Tip: Great location AND ambiance!

We booked this motel because it is within walking distance to the Monterey Aquarium. The staff was very pleasant and helpful and the room was pleasant, with new, very comfortable bed. Buffet breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese are offered, and always appreciated. But 2 concerns would preclude us from staying here again. First, the cancellation policy is unreasonable. Once a room is booked, it cannot be cancelled without incurring a charge of $50. Also, if one books for multiple nights and leaves early, there is a $50. charge. Second, there is a $13. per night charge to park on the premises, whether in the garage or in a back lot outside. I have noticed this trend, especially in very popular destinations, and do not understand why there is an additional charge to park.......this should be included in the room price. But more annoying was the fact that the sprinklers sprayed water on our car, resulting in water spots that were very difficult to remove from the windshields as well as the hood.

Room Tip: Third floor garden view rooms are the most quiet.

Firstly, I would like to thank this reviewer for taking a moment to share their experience. Candid responses from our guests are very important to us, as such feedback provides our most valuable took for improving not just our property, but also the service we provide all of our guests.

I would also like to thank this reviewer for their high ranking of our service and location; our staff and our nearness to Cannery Row are two of our greatest assets, and we are glad this guest enjoyed both.

That being said we are all disappointed that, despite this reviewer’s kind regard for certain aspects of our hotel, their stay was less than entirely wonderful.
Regarding our cancelation policy, I do want to clarify that the fee is actually $25, and not $50. We have this policy, as well as the early departure policy, in place because of the small size of our hotel. Unlike some larger hotels, we never purposely over sell our rooms – we do not assume that a certain percentage of those with reservations are going to, just, not show up. Once a reservation is made for a certain date or a certain number of dates, we cease trying to sell that room – after all, both the hotel and the guest have agreed that this room is going to be occupied. When a cancelation or an early departure occurs, our staff needs to sell the room all over again, often with very little forewarning. The fees are in place to compensate for the time of our staff, or for the possibility that we won’t be able to resell the newly available room.

As for this reviewer’s comments regarding the parking fee; as our policy, we try very hard to make sure that our guests are charged for only what they want and use. Some properties, including some of our neighboring hotels, use a “resort fee” to charge guests for amenities; typically this includes access to a business center and parking. Our company disagrees with this practice because all guests are made to pay this fee, but not all guests use these services. Still other properties will offer similar services “complimentary,” and put the charge in the room rental. In this way, the fee is hidden from the guest, and they end up paying sales tax on something they might not have wanted in the first place. Out of respect to our guests, we feel that it is unfair to charge for something that is not wanted or used, and as such we offer optional amenities and services, such as parking, separately.
Additionally, this charge is important to us as it goes directly toward our efforts to create a secure environment for our guests; this includes a night security guard, security cameras, and other features. We also feel that the amount we charge is reasonable, especially compared to some of our neighbor hotels which charge up to $22 for the same service. We do regret that this separation of service made this reviewer think less of our hotel, and hope that it does not deter anyone from staying with us in the future. Our goal is to make all of our guests feel welcome and respected, and a part of this is being honest about what they pay for.

Should any guest like to speak with one of our managers directly about a question or concern, please do not hesitate to give us a call; we are more than happy to speak with any of our guests. We would also very much like the opportunity to welcome back all of our guests – both those who have enjoyed their stay, and those whom we may have fallen short of impressing – so that we might demonstrate how genuinely dedicated we are to providing a wonderful, well serviced Monterey experience.

Thank you,
the General Manager

We stayed up here with a group of "challenged" clients. There were about 12 in our group. I have to say that we have never been treated so well in all of our stays. This hotel staff was amazing....any of our needs were met within minutes. They had cornered off a place for us to park our bus by the time we arrived, which was awesome. They greeted us with luggage racks and delivered and handled all of that. We were given lists with each client and their corresponding room number as it does get confusing with so many of us, so that was a huge help. We even had an "accident" on the bus and Brennen (I think that was his name) helped our driver clean it all up, which is going very much above and beyond....highly recommend this hotel....each of our rooms had its own patio or balcony....fireplaces a nice touch....breakfast was wonderful as well as the cheese and wine reception in the afternoon...great location, 5 minute walk from Cannery Row. Thanks again!

First and foremost, I would like to begin by thanking this reviewer for taking the time to share their experience. Honest, candid feedback from our guests is our hotel’s best tool for making changes, and we are always grateful for the opportunity to improve. I am very happy to hear that our service helped this guest (and their guests!) had such a wonderful experience, and we are all looking forward to the opportunity to welcome them back. We were also thrilled with the responsiveness of Brandon at the front desk, and we are making sure that he is well recognized for his efforts.
Thank you, again!

This hotel is one renovation away from a five star rating.

My wife and I stayed here during the off season (February) - we were in town for the AT&T ProAm at Pebble Beach.

Charm: The rooms are a little outdated, yes, but that adds to their "charm". The one we stayed in (3rd floor) had a gas fireplace in the room with light kitchy, old light fixtures on the wall. There isn't a huge pool since the hotel is so close to the ocean, but they do have a jacuzzi that we used a couple nights - so nice and hot, and no one there to interrupt the silence. Speaking of silence, the hotel was very quiet and peaceful but that was probably because we were there during the off season and most of the occupants we saw were adult couples.

Service: The staff there really tries to accommodate you without being too in your face about it. The check in/out process was very smooth - they allowed a late check out for us since we had an afternoon flight. Any time we needed more towels, they were at our door in minutes. The daily maid service is great - they cleaned the room well each time and accommodated our schedules on when we'd be in/out of the rooms.

Location: This hotel is walking distance to just about everywhere in the Cannery Row area of Monterey - including the Aquarium, Cannery Row shops, and dozens of restaurants that run the gamut of cuisine and price ranges. They have an underground parking garage that is about $15/day - beware of this added expense. There is street parking, but it's all time restricted and would cost you more per day than parking in the garage here. You are also pretty close to "downtown" Monterey, and minutes from the 1 freeway, which takes you to Pebble Beach/17 mile drive (1 exit away) and Carmel (a few exits later). I'd recommend both of those, as well as staying on the 1 freeway until you hit the Big Sur area (about 45 minute drive each way).

Value: Included in the rate is free Wi-Fi, which worked really well in our room, and a full breakfast spread every morning. Granted, the breakfast is the same every day so you might want to mix it up a little if you're staying there for longer than a few days, but what do you expect?! They have cereals, fruits, yogurts, muffins, toast, and great hot selections including: pre-made egg "omelets", french toast, and sausages. The room where breakfast is served was pretty full when we went down there during the "slow" season so I'm sure it gets packed during the summer. They also offer a wine and cheese social in the late afternoon. We were out site seeing every time that was offered so I can't tell you if the wine and cheese were good quality, but it's an extra perk included in the price of the room. There is also a computer in the lobby hooked up to a printer but it is terribly slow. I'd recommend using it to get Aquarium tickets so you get the "hotel" deal, or for printing out airline boarding passes, but forget about general web surfing.

All in our room was less than $150/night including parking, taxes, and fees, which is a great deal considering the sites around Monterey & Carmel. The only downside were that the rooms are getting a little dated, especially the bathrooms, but I've yet to find a place for less than $200/night that "has it all".

I'd recommend this to my family & friends, and would stay here again if I got the same rate.

Room Tip: Stay on the 3rd floor, which is the top floor - you are guaranteed not to have anyone above you stom...
