Main Beach is the "main" beach in town at the junction of PCH and Laguna Canyon Road. It is the iconic (maybe not the best) each in town but it is always a hub of activity. As a heads-up, we never-ever park around here. Our visits always include somewhat close-by lodgings so we can walk over here without the misery of parking meter competition (much like roller derby without the skates).
While we lived here in Laguna for 8 years (having since fled for blissful solitude in the AZ desert), this was always a favorite walkable place for us to go. And, as people have pointed out in other TA reviews, the homeless population does in fact congregate here at Main Beach within the guidelines set forth by the LBPD and (we assume sanctioned by) the city fathers. Never have we been accosted by the folks who have no home other than what they create for themselves here. Enough said. Everyone's reality is their own.
Around the beach we see full court volley ball games led by accomplished athletes. People are out walking their dogs, playing with their kids, keeping company with each other, and maybe only themselves. We are of all ages and activity levels and we all seem to have happy outlooks on what life has rolled in our direction. The music from the "sans" home group is lively and infectious.
The surf level varies but when it is gentle, families frolic in the breakers while life guards in their stations keep watch. This is a main hub. Our son used to work Beach Patrol for the City while in graduate school and knows full well the upside and underside of this beach (and this city). Main Beach is what you want it to be and what you are willing to accept. Perfection may be an ideal but this is a piece of reality ... warts and all.
