This place was for its first 20 years one of the only restaurants in Lafayette. I remember going there in the 1960's. The place is much larger now. However, the menu hasn't changed much and is still generic California-Mexican (rice+beans+pick your meat). If one has never been to a Mexican restaurant, this would be an excellent place to start. Decent food, decent portions, decent value; and we had a wonderful server. But, in my opinion, there are many other places (say in SF's Mission District) that offer more interesting food. El Charro's menu needs a major update!
