On November 27th we drove the scenic one-and-a-half hour drive from Palm Desert to Idyllwild, a charming mountain town in the San Jacinto Mountains west of the Coachella Valley, to have breakfast at our favourite cafe, the Red Kettle. Walking through the front door transports you back 40 years to when red and white checked gingham curtains, exceptionally friendly service, delicious food and reasonable prices were de rigueur. My breakfast of pancakes, easy-over eggs and bacon was as delectable as I have ever had, and as good as the last time we we were there. My husband’s French toast, eggs and sausages were equally scrumptious. Our friendly server kept our coffee cups filled while we waited for our meal to come out of the kitchen. The only negative was that we waited more than half an hour for our breakfast because of a computer glitch that prevented the order from getting to the kitchen staff. Once the error was detected the staff leapt into action and we had our meals within five minutes. On our next visit to the Palm Desert area we will definitely return to the Red Kettle. The circle route drive from the valley to Idyllwild and then northward to Cabazon and back to Palm Desert is a relaxing and very enjoyable way to spend four to five hours.
