On arrival, it looked like it would be a good choice.... We were seated promptly even though they were very busy with their lunch crowd. The menu is extensive and takes a while to get through it. There are many combination plates. This means you get a rice and an egg roll. We started with the pot stickers. They were from Frozen and then microwaved. No evidence of being fried. They were HORRIBLE. I think you get about 8 on a plate. My husband and I each are one and left the remainder. Our server just took it away. Next arrived our meal. We went with a combination plate. Mine was some kind of chicken, hubby went with the sale and pepper fish. My chicken had some kind of breading. It was hard to bite into ( dried out and thick)and only had a bit if chicken inside. It was super salty. The rice was pork fried rice. It was not eatable. The bits of pork were so old and dry, as was the rice. My husband's fish was equally as bad. Poor quality, overly cooked or just old from the freezer. Our server asked if we wanted to take our food to go. We told him is was the worst food we had ever eaten. Our complaints feel on in deaf ears. He just removed our plates and brought the bill. My family member living here told us that this restaurant is very popular with the locals. I did not know how. A change perhaps from the many Mexican restaurants.
I DO NOT recommend this place and will never return.

Excellent IF one orders off the menu ... the lunch and dinner specials are ordinary.
Excellent dishes include: Walnut Shrimp, Garlic Asparagus, Shrimp with Vegetables, Special WonTon Soup (NOT the same as regular wonton soup).
Can be very cheap - the Special Wonton Soup is huge bowl with rice - $10 - good for two
Can be pricey if Shrimp are ordered, but this place makes the best tender large shrimp ever !
Crowded at rush hours

Chi nese food in Imperial Valley is a bit different -- it has an interesting history. As many know, Chinese laborers were imported early 20th Century to work on installing US railroads -- subsequently, these non-citizens were denied citizenship or even residency -- many moved to Mexicali, Mexico. A large Chinatown flourished there for years - and remnants of its glory are still visible. Many Chinese restaurants opened- and gradually Chinese cooking became infused with Mexican cooking, and this has crossed the border back to the US. So- enjoy the difference!!
I particularly like Shrimp with veggies and the large Wonton Soup - which is only $10 and is enough for 2.

The Fortune house has been a favorite ever since it opened as a break off of another local restaurant. I was introduced to it by the sales manager at a car lot I sold at and it was our favorite, usually at least once a week.
Our favorite combo, salt and pepper chicken, shrimp fried rice and barbeque pork. A normal order if each will feed four or five and halves last my wife and I a couple or three meals. Best Chinese north of the border (ironic huh?).

Sometimes I simply crave delicious, plain, simple Chinese food prepared and served without the frills and accoutrements deemed so desirable by many restaurateurs today. I want Letter "C"; rice, stir-fry vegetables and meat, and a couple of shrimp piled on top. I want it hot and fresh with crispy vegetables. That's what i had placed before me for lunch this week at the Fortune House.

The food was abundant, really abundant, and downright delicious. I actually ordered what I described above. It was rapidly delivered to my table by an accommodating young waiter.

At lunch, guests were seating themselves, which I appreciated since I had limited time to enjoy my food.

The restaurant is nothing spectacular, but it is clean and spacious with room around the tables for dining comfort.

Will I return? When the craving for well-prepared, basic Chinese food strikes me again; probably in about three days!
