With good friends we celebrated Father's Day with a great steak dinner.
One lesson learned was a $35 corkage fee that I will not do again. My wife and I shared the Mastro's Salad and it was outstanding. For the table we shared the Lobster Mashed potatoes and it was large enough for the 4 of us that we took some home. I had the bone in 12 oz. filet and it was outstanding. My wife had the 8 oz. filet and she said it was also outstanding. Our friend had the NY Pepper steak and he said it was very good. Service was excellent.

Thirty-six years ago, we moved to Orange County. Forty-five years ago today, we were married. Finally, we made a reservation and enjoyed a meal at Castro's Steakhouse in Costa Mesa.

We often enjoy fine dining experiences throughout Orange County, but somehow we have skipped Mastro's. At last! We were NOT disappointed.

Reservations were made via Open Table, where we noted that we were celebrating our anniversary. Each employee we encountered while being seated and served congratulated us for this event. Much to our surprise, our menu was headed with Happy 45th Anniversary, especially for us. This attention to detail exemplifies the type of service we received throughout the night!

We split a 33 ounce rib eye, which was perfectly cooked, sliced, and served on a platter ready to share. Our plates were so warm the meat kept cooking when plated...deliciously so. Everything about the dish was perfect...the seasoning, the presentation, the "doneness", the tenderness, and most of all, the flavor. We chose fresh green beans with thinly sliced almonds as a side dish and garden fresh heirloom tomatoes with burrata as a starter. We wondered why we had waited so long to try this place out!

This weekend was busy...anniversaries, graduations, birthdays and father's day. Although I appreciate the desire to turn tables, I still resent the feeling of being rushed to finish each course. In spite of the "efficiency", once we paid our bill, we were allowed to linger without feeling pressured to leave. Kudos to Mastro's.

This chain is right up there with the big chains for over the top quality and top prices. Our dinner included a great seafood platter, enormous Nigerian shrimp and Australian Wagu beef that melted in our mouths. Of course the service is superbly attention, extremely professional and friendly. The only negative food experience was the crab on the seafood platter which, instead of being sweet was very salty. Go here for a food experience that is unique in the protein on the menu and expect to pay up.

Mastro's is my favourite steakhouse in OC. And again we weren't disappointed. PERFECT steaks paired with friendly service is a receipe for a great night. The California wines are way overpriced but you can still find some great wines from around the world at a reasonable price.
