I hope to help others by clarifying a few things. No, you can not just drive up to the gate and hope to get in. The lighthouse is too far to take pictures from the road. No, it’s not free, but worth every cent.

You can make a reservation online or you may meet up at the “abandoned” motel 1 mile away at (the only one around you can’t miss it) at 9:45 am. You can pay the guides that drive up. I’ll post hours via their brochure. Guides will meet you and you will caravan in with your own vehicle and park inside next to the lighthouse. No, you cannot sneak in; they check your tickets as you drive in.

We had a fabulous guide talk about and show the: lighthouse, housing, plant life, animals and history. I’ve heard the tours are two hours; our tour was three hours and he easily could have spent more time. Very friendly guide and very approachable.

We took our 7 & 11 y/o. Depending on your kids maturity level, little ones may have a hard time. My 12 y/ o loves history and science, so did well. We did have an extra long tour so my 7 y/o was tired at the end. We all agreed it was worth every minute!

Wonderful tour, I totally recommend it. You do have to plan for it, though. The tour only leaves once a day, or certain days of the week in the off season. And you have to meet at a location other than the light station, then follow a pilot car into the facility. You can book online in advance, but I just showed up and that worked fine even though it was a Saturday in summer.

The tour is done by docents, the group is split up into manageable group sizes, and you walk around the grounds and through the buildings while hearing stories and information. It was Really Wonderful, our guide was knowledgeable, funny and interesting. Everyone in the group enjoyed it, from the 2 small children to a couple of oldsters, and the rest of us in between.

Do this, it's great.

The tour began at an assembly point which is an old motel that the BLM now owns that is about 1.5 miles north of the light house turnoff on CA 1. After a brief orientation, we got in our vehicles and followed the docent to the lighthouse for a two hour guided tour of the lighthouse and the surrounding sea life. There were 15 vehicles and 40 of us on the tour. They broke us into two groups. It was a very informative and interesting 2 hour trip around the lighthouse property. It is accessible for the disabled as a lady with a walker was included in our group. I learned five new things today and at $10 for the fee (which goes to the lighthouse restoration), I considered it a great deal. The docents are very informative and interesting.

You have to call and make reservations for a tour. This is managed by the BLM and not CA State Parks. Limited hours and at times they are doing research there. So, know before you go ! Beautiful area and a lot of history. The top of the lighthouse sits downtown Cambria. A earthquake weakened the structure and the heavy glass was removed. It still works.

Great tours there, worth the time and money to go (nominal entry fee). They have restored the native plants and labeled them for those interested in the flora. Saw whales spouting from there. Enchanting.
