Tours are not available every day, so make sure you check the schedule. Planning is very well worth the time and effort, however. You will learn about lighthouse practices, history, and technology, along with an ecology lesson about this stretch of California coastline. In addition, you will view lots of sea lions and elephant seals and, if very lucky, a sea otter.

The tour was about two hours and walked the whole time. Very easy trails to walk on and the volunteer tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. There is a stop where they offer binoculars to look out to sea but it was a little overcast when we went, can't fault the tour guide for that, so we didn't get to see much ocean wildlife. We booked through recreation.gov and it made it a snap but they do offer walk ups, you just have to meet at 945 at the motel. Lots of pretty flowers along the trail. They separate everyone in to tour groups so it makes it nice to travel in a small group of people. At $10 per ticket it was absolutely a great way to spend an afternoon at the coast. They also have a gift shop to help support the restoration of the light station.

The tour exceeded our expectations. Volunteer staff keep this place up for the Bureau of Land Management. This is a fun and informative tour.

Helpful Hint: the whole tour takes about 2 hours. There is a gift shop on site, they sell water. There is a porta potty on site. Bring good walking shoes.

Enjoy some history, beautiful views, the ocean air, and learn about lighthouses and this important function.

Well worth a Morning.

Helpful Hint: make this your morning activity, follow it up with a visit to Hearst CAstle later.

What a lovely two hours spent with Roger and Kathy our tour guides. We met at the old motel and caravaned in our cars to the lighthouse. It was great to hear about them plants and sea life and see the old lighthouse. I hope they get enough money to restore it. We then went to 1000 Main in Cambria to see he lighthouse light that has been removed. A must for families.
