Never stayed but I used to play here with a band. Easy to get to: just follow the signs to Bolinas (which are regularly removed by residents who don't want to be found). Expect much tie-died shirts. Park yourself at the bar and let Smiley's happen to you. A time warp. (bonus for musicians: Smileys drink vouchers in the form of $3 bills)

We wandered in after having lunch to check the "oldest continuously operating" bar in California and maybe chat up some locals. The atmosphere was cool and the bartenders were friendly. The selection on tap was small but decent and the prices were good.

A great experience and I look forward to another visit sometime soon.

If you are a dog lover,Bolinas is your kind of place. Laid back,it's the quiet side of this bay. We've been boogie boarding at Stinson Beach, the other side of Bolinas bay. But I prefer the quaint hotel, behind the oldest bar in California. Hiking trails everywhere at the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. Small shops, museum, art gallery, and extreme peacefulness at one of the coasts best getaways. Bolinas has been a birthday celebration place, and I highly reccommend it!!!!

I love this town! Bolinas is the rock that has remained relatively untouched by the tides of development money sloshing up and down the West coast, and Smiley's has remained steadfastly as simple and true to its roots as the modern tourism business allows. Don't let the cast of scruffy characters from central casting hanging out in front of the saloon scare you and the kids off, just go ahead and rent the very quiet room #3 with the 2 huge beds, picnic bench and turn-of-the-century desk (with no chair) where you'll be safe and can tuck the kids in and go down to hear the live music in the saloon while quaffing IPAs with the 12 "Smiley's bucks" they give you at check-in. If you detect attitude on the part of the barkeep, well that's just part of the show, folks. The cafe across the street has excellent dinners and don't miss the Bolinas (organic) People's Store for those 60's vibes.

Room tip: Room #3 in the far back is very quiet even on live music nights in the saloon.

It was not very welcoming and the bartender, I can't remember her name I try to forget. What an attitude!!! Don't ask about the beer or any questions, that's too much to ask of her. We drank our drink's as fast as we could & left. How disappointing considering someone at Stinson Beach had recommended it.
