The gardens are really pretty and relaxing to sit back and read or just to catch your breath. You feel like you've stepped back decades and are enjoying some luxuries from the past. We enjoyed our stay. There was no TV - didn't miss it. The rooms are small but comfortable.

Room Tip: We had a fantastic view of the bay from a higher floor

Dear srlawrence1,

Thank you for your kind review.

We are delighted that you enjoyed the gardens and the serene spaces to take a step outside of a busy world.

Although the guestrooms are without TV's, know that we are in the process of slowly revamping our hotel rooms with better furnishings.

Truly wishing you all the best!

This hotel bills itself as historic, so I expected historic furnishings, but I didn't expected historic rules . . . like "must wear a bathing cap to use the pool" (no one used the pool) . . . like "quiet hours" that made murmuring (really inaudible) whispers in hall against the (enforced against us) rules. . . it was weird and pretty creepy. It is a large building, so old doesn't mean quaint either, more like cavernous and dusty. There's a bit too much reverence for the architect (I'm sure she was groundbreaking, but I didn't need the shrine), and too much strangeness about the "club" to be comfortable. The room was just adequate, not large, not particularly comfortable. No chair, no tv, just beds and a nightstand and a worn out rug. Old bathroom fixtures, fine, but how about a place to rest my toothbrush? The breakfast room had run out of everything . . .coffee cups, black tea, fruit, and despite the promise of a "robust" continental breakfast, there was processed cold cereal and some hardboiled eggs that's about all. I won't be staying here again.

Dear ctraveler81,

Thank you so very much for your review and sharing your thoughts with us and other potential travelers.

As a historic building, we strive to maintain the beauty of the surroundings. Within the last year, we have begun updates to our hotel rooms, though it will take some time to get through them all.

In regards to the pool, since it was constructed back in 1929, some portions of it are more antiquated and take great care to maintain. Just last year we completed the installation of new pool fans to minimize noise and provide lessened humidity and better air flow in the area.

We are committed to preserving the beautiful building, but with the historic nature of things, we need to remain mindful that changes cannot happen as quick as we would always like.

It is our hope that you were able to enjoy some of the quiet pleasures of the venue.

We wish you the best.

It's hard to rate this hotel. It is historic, but sometimes it just felt old and dated. My room smelled a little musty when I first arrived, but I left the windows open during my entire stay and that seemed to solve that program. The hotel creaks at night. You can hear the hot water pipes whistle while somebody in another room is showering so if you're a light sleeper, this might not be the place for you.

The architecture is cool, and the history is interesting. If the free breakfast were better, I might lean towards staying here again...but it's hard to give up the modern amenities in a newer hotel.

Dear Mike L,

Thank you kindly for sharing your thoughts with us and other potential travelers.

We are glad that you enjoyed the architecture and beauty around you.

With a building of the historic nature that it is, improvements and updates are part of our commitment to maintain the spaces, but there are many on our wishlist to accomplish.

Know that we are committed to continuing to improve our rooms and spaces, but we certainly know that our hotel is different from those that provide more modern conveniences.

We thank you for choosing to stay with us and wish you all the best in your travels, wherever they may take you.

Set in the heart of Berkley near the university and in easy reach of dozens of cafes and restaurants.
Good size rooms. Free wifi. Cold Breakfast buffet is included. Parking is available next to the hotel at a cost of $25.
Ask for a west facing room on one of the upper floors and you get great views of San Fransisco all the way to San Fransisco Bridge on a clear day.
There are no TV's in the room. Complimentary tea and coffee is available downstairs until 5.30pm although we generally found it available later than this.
Rooms could do with an update - yes I know it's an historic hotel but regular improvements and maintenance are a necessity. A deep clean will also help - dust off the high areas and remove mould.

Room Tip: Ask for a west facing room on the 6th floor for great views of the bay.

Spent only one night at this beautiful historic hotel. There are interior courtyards that are quiet & serene. Several sitting areas in lobby. Coffee/tea bar available in lobby. Rooms were nothing special but the bed was comfortable. Very few rooms with 2 beds but they do offer rollaway beds. Only one electrical outlet that was hard to find. No television which was fine. The indoor swimming pool is very nice, similar to the pool at the Hearst Castle. Ask for a room on the 6th floor with a view of San Francisco. There is also an outside sitting area on the 6th floor which we discovered the morning we were leaving. The continental breakfast was limited with fruit, bagels, muffins, hard boiled eggs but the dining room was gorgeous. Parking $20 per day. Nightly rate was expensive but a nice way to celebrate a special event.

Dear frenal123,

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write a review.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and were able to celebrate a special event nearby.

The Courtyards are some of our favorite places as well. It seems as though they transition beautifully from the gorgeous architecture inside.

Truly wishing you all the best!
