Owner description: Internationally recognized for its art and film programming, BAMPFA is UC Berkeley’s primary visual arts venue with its screenings of some four hundred films and presentations of up to twenty exhibitions annually. BAMPFA’s collection of over 19,000 works of art dates from 3000 BCE to the present day and includes important holdings of Neolithic Chinese ceramics, Ming and Qing Dynasty Chinese painting, Old Master works on paper, Italian Baroque painting, early American painting, Abstract Expressionist painting, contemporary photography, and Conceptual art. The collection also includes over 17,500 films and videos, including the largest collection of Japanese cinema outside of Japan, impressive holdings of Soviet cinema, West Coast avant-garde film, seminal video art, as well as hundreds of thousands of articles, reviews, posters, and other ephemera related to the history of film—many of which are digitally scanned and accessible online. BAMPFA is closed as it moves into its new state-of-the-art building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The new BAMPFA opens to the public in late January 2016.

The old, brutalist/modernist building just closed and I for one will miss it a lot. I loved that building. Exhibits are hit and miss, some quite good for a public university museum, some kind of so-what. PFA is a treasure for cinephiles but I've never found the temporary quarters comfortable. High hopes for the new building, which will be home to galleries and PFA, set to open January 2016 I think. But I'll still miss the old building, with it's great sculpture garden.

Bad news is that this place is now a bit worn out and empty feeling -- although it has a pretty good cafe in the back -- but the good news is that they are building a brand new facility near downtown Berkeley that looks to be fabulous, in the theater district downtown, that open in Spring 2016. I can't wait!!

I recently went to visit family during my trip to California, and thanks to my grandfather, my mother, aunt and I were able to get a tour of the Berkeley Art Museum before our vacation was up and before it closes in December. I had a wonderful time and being able to see all the art was truly spectacular. I encourage anyone visiting or living in the Bay Area to definitely go see if they haven't already.

After seeing this Museum one may tend to argue as to how much art is available, yet some exhibits are interesting.

More particularly, the deity section displaying some rare pieces from Tibet, Nepal and India, and 'C' section displaying some ink and colour paintings from China are very attractive!

The layout of the museum is nice such that one starts seeing exhibits from one end to the other without having to go back.

Worth a visit in case you are in Berkeley!
