This historic castle (home of a Hungarian aristocrat who inspired "The English Patient") rises over a little village in this rural part of the Austria. The setting - ancient trees, the sweeping views, the well tended garden, a little swimming pool - adds to the overall particular charm of the castle.
The owners live on the ground. They and their staff make you feel like their very personal guest all day round.
The rooms were furnished in a charming old-fashioned way (unfortunately also the mattresses), the bathroom however was modern. We loved the terrasse and the little swimming pool surrounded by lavender plants.
Food was home made and very good (breakfast and candle light dinner). Good choice of local wines. We would definitely come back.

We had a wonderful one week stay in this beautiful and peaceful place. The grounds are beautiful. The rooms are very well preserved and furnished with antiques. It was like going way back in time. The large dining room is lit with only candles. The vistas of the countryside are magnificent. The owners were very kind and accommodating and the food was very good too. We had a wonderful experience.

We have had the pleasure to stay at Burg Hotel Bernstein several times in the past, last 39 years ago on our honeymoon. This visit was as delightful as our previous visits and the present generation of the Almasy family is as diligent, dedicated and expert in what they do as past generations. While the amenities are modernized and Internet access is available in parts of the castle, the family has applied their philosophy of leaving as much of the castle as possible in the historically authentic state and style. This makes a stay at Burg Bernstein absolutely unique. The breakfasts and dinners are served in the most delightful manner and the kitchen produces marvelous food, using where possible, locally produced ingredients. This all is enhanced by the warmth that everybody shows when dealing with guests. A grand experience throughout.

Room tip: we stayed at the Princess room with a gorgeous view of the surrounding Burgenland

The setting, the views and the atmosphere of Burg Bernstein make this the most memorable hotel we have ever visited. Every staircase, room and cobwebby nook oozed history and we had great fun checking it out.

Our room was exceptionally clean and comfortable but had no TV, alarm clock or refrigerator. This didn't bother us at all, and the authentic well worn furniture was very much in keeping with the castle itself but wi-fi is available onsite in a separate salon. Stern medieval portraits looked down in disapproval as we explored all the treasures and corners of our enormous double room and the adjoining 3 rooms at our disposal. We spent two nights there and would have liked to stay longer.

The grounds are huge and the gardens colourful and unmanicured - which is how we imagined they might have looked hundreds of years ago. The views are wonderful and gave plenty of scope for photographs. We also discovered a pair of handsome horses stabled under the hotel entrance.

We had the ornate dining room all to ourselves on both nights and we enjoyed simple but fresh and delicious 3 course meals prepared by the hostess and chef, Andrea. Her lemon cake is to die for! Breakfasts were also outstanding and the best of our entire Austrian tour.

Our hosts were friendly and very entertaining. Andrea is delightful and Alex has a wonderfully wicked sense of humour. There are a few of his little jokes hidden in the castle waiting to be discovered. The castle has a historical and movie link to "The English Patient", and perhaps also to the more recent kids' movie "Hotel Transylvania". Nah - just kidding, but the setting does have some similarities! We would love to go back again one day.

You can spend a day without doing anything and feel content in Burg Bernstein. Delicate rooms full of antique artifacts make you embrace time through space. A tremendous garden is a must see. Prepare your camera to liberate light and shadow therein.
