“Absolutely incredible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2010

We spent a week at Fregate Island in February with our son and daughter, ages 9 and 6. It was the most amazing experience for all of us. It really is your own private island, exactly the way that nature intended it to be experienced.

For the week we were there, the weather was a bit unusual for February - there was fairly high surf - and some of the beaches were closed. Our kids are good swimmers and enjoyed getting pummeled in the larger waves and trying to swim out past the break. If you want consistent flat water, this is not the place to go.

We were very fortunate that Juliette at Mr. and Mrs. Smith had arranged for us to be in Villa 3. It was perfect for our family of four. A fantastic master bedroom, dining area and living room on one level, and a second bedroom with bathroom on a lower level for the kids. They thought it was fantastic, like they had their own house. I would not recommend that Villa for children any younger, or non swimmers, as the room opens onto the pool area.

As far as our stay on the island, we took advantage of just about everything we could, and I have to say the entire Fregate team is absolutely amazing. Nothing we asked for was too much, and after we had been there a few days and we got to know them and they got to know us, some of the recommendations and arrangements they made for us were just incredible. From our beachside dinner to having the chef prepare raviolis for our son at an island lookout on a golf cart stove - absolutely amazing. The motto of the island is anything, anywhere, anytime and they certainly lived up to it. The food was absolutely incredible. Every meal was beautifully presented and incredibly well prepared. Notwithstanding the gourmet quality of the meals, they were always ready to prepare something simple and vegetarian for my wife as well as the usual child friendly meals.

Before our trip, we read some of the reviews on this site that talked about millipedes in the rooms and other issues with "nature". I have to say, once you see the situation on the island, this should be the least of your concerns. The rooms are meticulously cleaned, twice daily, and while the millipedes can be large, they are completely harmless. After we did a tour with the island ecologist and the kids held the millipedes for themselves, it was a complete non-issue. The birds (and the lizards) are everywhere and they join you for breakfast and lunch, but that is part of what makes this island and the entire experience so unique.

This is not a Four Seasons and it doesn't and shouldn't try to be. It is an incredibly unique island in a very unique location in the world. We have been to a number of other 5*+ resorts, and always enjoyed ourselves, but this is truly a very special experience that (to date) beats all others.

If you do give Fregate a try, do it with an open mind (and wallet) and you will enjoy yourself in ways you never thought possible. If you are not comfortable in a natural environment or you feel you have to control every moment and make it work to your standards and expectations, this is not the experience for you. On the other hand, if you like unique experiences, extreme luxury and are willing to let the island try its magic on you, you will not be disappointed.

We are working on our return trip now!

Many thanks to Marc and the team for making our stay so enjoyable.

As a child I wondered what would become of bird sanctuaries with endangered species. Would people ever see them? On Fregate Island Private, amongst the exclusive villas, endangered species thrive; they are curious, and the kids LOVED them! There is a beautiful beach for swimming and snorkelling at the marina, and we tried sailing an optimist with the kids in the harbour. The staff were very relaxed and friendly, Asanga booked everything and Sherpa'd meals and picnics to every point on the island (he even beamed us the Cricket World Cup! You beaudy!) Eric at the harbour gave me a proficient PADI course (I did okay for a poor swimmer) and we had a great time underwater - the reef is slowly recovering after EL Nino 1999 and the tsunami, and the fish are slowly coming back (Eric showed me his friendly Napoleon fish).
If the golf carts were any faster they would have accidents on some of the corners and besides, they are SOLAR… and Rufus will never forget (driving) them! Neither will someone else’s kid that nearly hit us! We had one or two days of rain and if that spoils your holiday like the Italian correspondent well, that’s just the luck of the draw. The Gym is squashed full of flash new expensive kit and it all worked as far as the kids could see! We all did a massage which is a damn good idea for the legs after a dive course and certainly between long flights.
The island is full of fun, luxury and culture and a tribute to the owner, his touch is on everything (especially the historical nautical museum).
Many thanks to Marc for his special treatment and our best regards to everyone

This private island with just 16 villas is a real paradise and nature reservation... If you wish to have a beautiful beach with turquoise water on your own, a fascinating nature with giant turtles and rare birds surrounding you, your own private pool and jacuzzi or are eager to have a tête-à-tête breakfast, private lunch or dinner at your favorite beach or high up in a tree house in a Banyan tree this is the place to be!

You have your own butler who is fully at your disposal.
You never get bored on this island: Different dining experiences, guided nature walks, sunbathing, diving and snorkling possibilities, boat trips and a SPA which definitively can compete with the best SPAs in Asia (the natural SPA products are all prepared from ingredients grown on island). And you have as much privacy on this island as you wish!

Food is marvelous, you can order something from the menu or have your special wishes... everything is possible and the very friendly staff is here to fulfill all your wishes. (Most vegetables and fruits are grown on the island itself, organically.)

The luxury of holidays on Fregate island is the privacy and space, the unique nature (you can find millipedes, geckos and birds everywhere) and the pampering you get from the very friendly and well trained staff. For us this island stands for tranquil, peaceful holidays in a beautiful, preserved and protected surrounding - ideal for everybody who likes a tropical paradise.

My girlfriend and I arrived at the Hotel via a Helicopter Transfer from Mahe. In my opinion the 969 Euro one way charged by the Helicopter company is highway robbery, and that's one of the issues that the Fregate should address one way or another. The transfer is 15 minutes...

Upon arrival, after a very long trip, we were greeted by the staff, and shown immediately to our Villa (number 6), which was great, as we were very tired from the trip, and it was only 9:00 am when we got there.

Here's my list of positives about the place:
* You have the whole island to yourself! With only 16 Villas and an average occupation rate of 70%, you will rarely bump into another guest. And with 5-6 beaches at your disposal (the Fregate is a very large private island), that's a really nice thing. So privacy is perfect.
* Service: From the amazing dedicated butler service (thanks Burhan) 24 hours a day, to all the other staff at the restaurants, etc. I have to say that the service is impeccable. Great job! Four Seasons +++ service.
* Beaches: gorgeous, especially 2-3 of them. But, there's a negative too (see below).
* Villas: Well maintained (maybe a freshening needed), very spacious, perfectly spaced out, with all the amenities that you would need, including free internet access. The exclusive pool / jacuzzi are great too.
* Nature: If you like Jurassic Park kind of nature, this is your place to be. Especially if you take a nature walk...
* Food: The highlight. "Anything anywhere" attitude. Great ingredients, all the fruits and vegetable grown organically on the island. Overall, perfect food, served perfectly, anywhere, anytime.
* The golf car: You get one for the duration of your stay. Fun to drive, great for exploration.
* The landscaping: Very well done. Great job by the "ecology" team.
* The attitude: Everyone, from management to the last gardener is friendly, with a "can do" attitude. Nothing we needed went unnoticed. Good people, smiling, helpful.

Some negatives:
* The beaches: With the exception of the Marina Beach, and partially the beach under the Lobby / Restaurant area, it's very difficult to impossible to swim in the other beaches due to the waves / currents. The Seychelles do not have reefs around the island like the Maldives, so the ocean waves come directly onto the beach. So, yes, the beaches are very beautiful, but a) the Maldives compare and b) it's better to swim / snorkel in the Maldives.
* Bugs: For me it was not really an issue. But for my girlfriend it was. The place is basically luxury within nature, so you get things like spiders, mosquitoes, and the indigenous giant millipede. The later is really huge and harmless, but certainly no fun to see crawling next to your bed (they seem to fall from the ceiling sometimes). Don;t think this is a major issue though. I brought along bug spray and that took care of things (I sprayed the room on arrival - they are not allowed to do so with chemicals, its; a conservation issue...). Also, you burn some special incense and that keeps the mosquitoes away. Not as big an issue as other reviewers have made it.
* The cost: Now, I do realize why they have to charge so much. I did the math, and the operation seems to be break even. I fully believe that the owner, a German billionaire, is basically covering his costs, and is not turning a profit. Because the place is enormous... I can only imagine what the lease of the island costs vs. a place in the Maldives. And in the Maldives, in islands 1/50th the size you will find 40 Villas, not 16. I do understand. However, the Value for Money factor is not high in my opinion. If 3.000 Euro / night is something you make in an hour, then yes, by all means this is a place you should visit. Otherwise, try something else.

Overall, one of the best places I have ever been. The rough sea at the beaches spoiled some of it, and that leads me to still believe that there's no place like the Maldives (especially resorts like Island Hideaway, which are not so crowded and have space between Villas).

Would I go back? Yes, but only after a few years.
