A simple hotel with rooms on the ground floor. Small and little bit dark bathroom. Nearby the castle and restaurants. Friendly owner. Breakfast on the roof. In town not always electricty and weak internet.

Hotel does not take credit cards as their website says. They then make their problem with the “connection”, our problem, even tho they probably are just trying to avoid the credit card company fees. They were not helpful or apologetic. They don’t have any lunch available. Power was out, despite the room being little pricey (for Gonder). Room was very small. They did very little to help us find a good priced private car for Bahri dar. We ended up leaving early. Try next door at fasil lodge. Much nicer. Bigger room for $40, rather than $65. They also have a cafe that serves all day.

Don't be fooled by the review in Lonely Planet. 50m down the road is a beautiful alternative. The doors bang closed endlessly. The rooms are adequate but as the sign says: The walls are thin so don't make noise after 10pm". Thin they are - we heard our neighbour's coughs and sniffs and more. The shower heads need a good clean if you are to get much water out.
The breakfast terrace is lovely with a beautiful view.... but this was the only time during our visit to Ethiopia where we encountered a complete lack of generosity with the meal.
The reception staff speak almost no English and asking for some boiling water was a big task.
We paid more to stay here than any other place in Ethiopia and it was our most disappointing stay.

We had a couple of nights at Lodge du Chateau during our stay in Gondar. The place is very well located for exploration of the Royal Enclosure – actually just across the street. It is also within easy walking distance of many good restaurants and other scenic sites. We had a very warm reception by the owner, Simon, and were very well taken care of. He has a real passion for tourism and making sure that all his guest are well taken care of.

The rooms all surround a small, pleasant garden courtyard with a nice eating area upstairs with some nice views over the rooftops. The breakfasts were excellent with lots of fresh foods and juices. The room itself was fairly basic and dimly lit at night, while the bathroom was small and a bit cramped, but functional. The soundproofing of the room was very poor, so we had to contend with lots of street noise, people noise, and a lot of thumping and bumping on the roof during the night. We did not sleep well as a result. We were disappointed with the Wifi internet access – it virtually wasn’t existent during almost our entire stay – we found it very frustrating. We had to go to surrounding restaurants to use their Wifi instead.

Overall, we found this a reasonably good base for our stay in Gondar, and would recommend it, however with the several caveats listed above. Really good location and very good service and management.
