“Good in parts”
Reviewed 11 December 2011

This Riu hotel is not as good as others we have stayed in. Perhaps we have outgrown Riu hotels. The reception staff are mixed. Some are polite and helpful whilst others are ill informed and off hand. The rooms are very small unless you get a room on the ground floor which are more spacious and have a patio. These ground floor rooms cost more. The rooms need updating - they are old fashioned but are in good order. There are a few items in the bathroom like soap and shoe cleaning sponge but again other hotels supply a wider variety of items like nail files, cotton buds, hand cream etc etc. This Riu hotel seems to be stuck in the 80's. Perhaps they have not caught up with other hotels because most of the guests are mature. The beds are firm and the pillows are hard or you can have a tiny feather pillow which is a ridiculous size. The air conditioning did not work but there was a fan in the room. Unlike other people we had no problem with sunbeds. The food is excellent and a couple of visits to the Crystal restaurant is well worth trying though the menu never varies there are choices for each course. The staff at other Riu hotels that we have stayed at are friendly and happy. I am sorry to say that this is not the case at this one. The head waiter in the restaurant is particularly miserable and very unhelpful. Do not drink the orange juice from the machine as it is awful and I am sure there is something wrong with it. The diet orange juice is far better. The coffee in the hotel is pretty bad. Whilst here 200 people went down with upset stomachs and some ended up in hospital. We were not informed about this from the hotel staff. or management. We thought that they should have warned us and told us to do extra hand washing. On a brighter note Jo the Thompson rep was very nice and also very helpful. I did not think a lot of Thompson's transfer coach where the driver played very loud 70's music presumably for his own pleasure - certainly it was not for our benefit.
I would not stay at a Riu hotel again despite having a Riu reward card.

Room Tip: ground floor only

My partner and myself took a last minute booking with Thompson's and quite honestly was only expecting a run of the mill hotel, but no, this place is definitely a cut above the rest.
From start to finish one could not fault anything.
Even though the hotel was reputedly full, the receptionist found us a room with twin beds, which we had initially asked for.
The food was top class, loads of choice, very fresh and good quality. No pushing and shoving at the food tables, very orderly. Mainly a German clientele so they have manners. For a personal touch at dinner try The Krystal restaurant. A lovely view.
The sun beds, yes some were taken with towels on them at eight in the morning but there were still plenty to go around.
The hotel staff, from the maid upwards were very courteous, polite and helpful at all times.
Location is very good overlooking the beach and looking across the bay to Los Americas.
Maybe a tad out in the sticks but that was not a problem as we like walking. There is a bus stop outside The Sheraton Hotel next door and a very efficient taxi service, if needed.
We would stay here again and recommend the hotel to our friends.

Room Tip: As the hotel is built at a slight angle, the ground and first floor have the largest size rooms, wit...

for a 5 star hotel i wasnt impressed atall.
Everything was average other than the service, which sometimes got a bit too much - like topping up your water every two seconds.

The rooms were clean, but would have liked a bit more space.
When we first arrived we were given 2 keys to decide which one we prefered. one room was unmade and had a rubbish view. The second was a sea view, clean room - which we obviously opted for.

The decor in rooms and around the hotel was very dated, and did not suit my personal taste.

Food was ok. Not amazing and there were some days where i left feeling hungry.
Location is well out of the way of anything for nightlife - weather your looking for lively or a quiet night.
some really lovely bars/places to eat in the daytime on the beach near by but not to my taste, im sure others however would enjoy.
A very long 20 min walk to the fanabe - where karaoke bars/english bars if you like that sort of thing.

few nice shops - zara/mango nearby.

The hotel was by no means awful, but id rather stay somewhere else for the money i paid!

Wouldnt choose to stay here again.

We have just come back from our holiday in Tenerife. Stayed at Riu Palace as a family of 4. The hotel is lovely, staff are fantastic and the location is superb, close to my favourite Del Duque beach. The food was also great. The only moan I would have is that the pools are quite basic and not very warm, the water temperature was about the same as in the ocean, which was refreshing. We still swam in both the ocean and the pools, but I would have enjoyed it more if the pools were a bit more heated. Otherwise I cannot fault this hotel. If you are choosing between this one and Ria Arecas I would definitely recommend Riu Palace, the location is miles better and the views are not even comparable between the two hotels. Thank you to all the staff!

My wife and I enjoyed a holiday here in late September 2011. The attraction was the guarantee of fine weather in out of school holiday time and our choice of the Riu Palace was based on our positive experience last year of one of their properties in Boa Vista. At this time of year the hotel seems to attract the more "senior" guest which probably contributes a lot to the peace and calm.

The hotel is in a great location at the beach front promenade with good access to local restaurants. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was sizeable and clean with a wonderful view across the gardens to the sea. We stayed on a half board basis and the food was very good although sometimes the seemingly endless choice of buffet items for dinner can be a bit tiring.

Wifi access is limited to the reception lobby which was a little frustrating as was the fact that the lobby bar was not open during the day until late afternoon thus thwarting the chance to have a drink in the cool of the hotel itself.

Overall it is a good example of Riu hotels and what they offer.
