Just returned from two weeks at the Yaramar, very disapointed from the start, the superior room was not as clean as it should have been, tea stains on the wall beside the kettle, very dusty floor, bathroom tiles need replaced and woodwork bashed to bits. The food was o.k. but the dinning room was far to hot to enjoy any meal, also many of the plates and bowles were chipped, but usually you has to ask the staff to get these for you, always running short. The pool area is far to small for the number of guests, no chance of a sun bed. The entertainment staff were excellent.
I would have complained about the room but when I saw the little spainish lady who had to clean all these rooms on our floor on her own - I just couldn't do it. She was no spring chicken. Beds very hard.

Room Tip: I would not recomend a superior room, not worth the extra money.

Our first impression of the hotel was positive, especially the location – right in the heart of activity with everything you would need at the Los Boliches end of Fuengirola !

Thomson reps wait for you outside the airport as it gets very congested by the airport doors. Transfer was very good! The Thomson rep accompanied the coach. Hotel check-in was very smooth and we were made very welcome and our bags were brought to our room for us. The gentlemen on reception all speak good English and are very pleasant. Our room was on the 2nd floor facing the sea! What a bustling place Fuengirola is, which made ‘people watching’ very interesting, as we sat on our balcony watching the world go by!!! The town was jammed pack full as it was the height of the summer holidays. The promenade is great and goes on and on for miles! Our room was okay – but just that! We have stayed in small motels in the USA for example, where you often have a larger space than at the Yaramar – however, the room met our needs, for our 10 night holiday. Free safe was appreciated! 16 euros for the fridge – which was quite small and just about did its job. We really appreciated the coffee/tea facilities which were replenished each day! Room was cleaned daily and towels changed .... we found ants in our room (224) and reported this to reception. We also had a water leak from above in the bathroom and that was mended promptly. The rooms could do with a refurbishment in our opinion. Flat-screen TV with lots of English speaking channels, which was great as the Olympics were still taking place! Free Wi-Fi in the hotel which I was grateful for – reception strength was a bit hit and miss – just ask for the password at reception.

As we arrived quite early in the day, we had time to go to the pool, but there were no sunbeds remaining, so we went across the road to the beach where if you show your roomkey you are entitled to 2 sunbeds and some sangria for 5 euros. The beach bar – the Riviera Club is fine – St Miguel beer went down well because it was so hot! Beware the sand gets scorching so you need good beach shoes.

However, we prefer being by the pool and as the hotel doesn’t open the pool until 9 a.m. or thereabouts, you need to be an early-bird, as there is ALWAYS a queue and if you want to find a space where you feel you are not encroaching too much on fellow guests space, we felt we had to join that queuing rat-race! This aspect thoroughly irritated me! We have never been to a Thomson Gold where this has been the case before .... nor any other hotel around the world to be honest! Most sunbeds were snagged by 9.05!!!! If you leave your sunbed for over an hour the hotel has the right to remove your belongings – we never actually witnessed this happening but there were plenty of complaints about the pool and sunbed situation! Basically the pool area is too small for the number of guests, and there isn’t the space for the hotel to enlarge the area .... unless they create a rooftop pool. If you like the beach then this will not be a problem. The sunbeds and tables were quite dirty and if they are cleaned the maintenance lad cleans them with you around, and the tiling around the pool! Why they aren’t cleaned prior to the pool being opened is beyond me?!!!! As other reviewers have mentioned apparently there has been a cutback in staffing ratios, so maybe this is the reason why!

The pool bar is fine – all the ladies who work there are very friendly and welcoming – Hola Tere!!! You are able to put all your drinks, ice-creams etc onto your room tab which we found convenient, and just settled the bill at the end of our holiday!

The food at this hotel is very good and there is plenty of variety – enough to satisfy most people’s palette. We enjoyed the salads very much. Drinks are good and there are plenty of Happy Hours at different times of day in the various bars; and we found the service fine. In the restaurant you find your own table at breakfast but in general we were shown to our table in the evening and our drinks order was taken straight away. We didn’t have to wait once! There is a freshly cooked area where you can have your omelette or whatever made to your request. Ice-cream cones at the pool bar are huge and delicious! Air-conditioning needs improving in the restaurant!

There are plenty of bars with comfortable seating and there is entertainment in the reception floor bar each evening, however we tended to go to the Thomson Gold Team’s entertainment each evening! The Team consists of four absolutely brilliant young people – Millie, Elle, Dan and Craig – they are each very talented and we both hope they have very successful careers! The ‘One Fine Day’ show was outstanding. They all work very hard and provide a variety of games and entertainment during the day. You are not pressurized into taking part. I really admired their cheerfulness and friendliness on a daily basis, as they have been at the Yaramar for some months already – they weren’t jaded at all – or covered it up if they were. They made guests feel very special – well done!

The downside was the basement area where the entertainment took place most evenings – the actual shape of the room means many people’s views were not good – they did provide a big screen for those in ‘the cheap seats!’ I’m sure the hotel could do something to improve this! When Thomson’s fly in a comedian the entertainment takes place next to the pool, as all the sunbeds are removed and tables and chairs set up. We didn’t think much of any of the flown-in acts to be honest and as we have been to many Thomson Gold hotels, feel we can make an honest comparison; the Entertainment Team were far superior! The duo, Sophistication, perform twice nightly and again they are very good and respond to guests’ tastes and requests; I enjoyed their sets immensely. I preferred the entertainment when it was hosted in the outdoor area, as for us 'al fresco' is part of spending time abroad, and it was definitely warm enough! However, I understand that most of the equipment needed is housed downstairs, which may explain why the majority of entertainment takes place there!

The Thomson welcome and goodbye meetings were very professional and informative. The Thomson reps were helpful to us. One member, Wayne, arranges items to introduce you to the locality and Spain such as walks around Fuengirola and Spanish lessons!

We went on two Thomson’s trips – one to Gibraltar – the Rock and Sail and the El Chorro train trip to the gorge above Fuengirola. Both trips were very good and we are pleased we went. The Gibraltar Day was an absolutely jam-packed itinerary – shopping, then a trip dolphin-watching and then a mini-bus tour around the Rock and a visit to the famous tunnels Churchill had built during the war. We were exhausted at the end of the day but would like to return under our own steam and take our time more! You were accompanied by a translator on the coach etc.
The second trip – the following day, was informative and we learned a lot about this area of Spain! We went by coach to Malaga train station and then transferred back to the coach after our train journey up to the mountains and the gorge; Spanish trains are brilliant! We visited some lakes and a reservoir where we enjoyed a Tapas meal – delicious and met some lovely holiday-makers. Then we went to an Organic Finca Farm where we tasted fruit from the trees and made Gazpacho (Chilled Tomato Soup) – we weren’t too keen but loved each of the individual ingredients! We then tried homemade marmalade and fresh orange juice. The guide was brilliant and helped to make the day informative, humorous and interesting.

The following day we were happy to return to our Kindles and sunbeds ... even if I was in the pool queue at 8.30! Sad but true! Once that daily chore was over we were able to relax and enjoy a leisurely breakfast! Usually, when on holiday, I will get up when I want to and nab a sunbed - this phenomenon happens all over the world in our experience - but I have NEVER had to queue before. It felt like being herded at a market! :O(

One of the Hotel Yaramar’s positive points is definitely its location which is brilliant as it is surrounded by numerous restaurants, bars and shops and local transportion is excellent should you wish to explore. There is always somewhere to stroll to such as the Marina and along the back streets. There is also a big shopping Centre near Fuengirola’s castle. The weather was great for our whole holiday – just a few clouds one day but sunshine every day. If like me you like to sit on your balcony and watch the sunrise – this takes place later than Cyprus for example, but they are beautiful to photograph!

The guests we chatted to were very pleasant and we were pleased to find an assortment of Nationalities and age-groups! We hope the young-uns didn’t mind us wrinklies being around, but I thought it was a healthy mix. The hotel fills up with families and there were some children at the hotel but not many at all! Other Thomson Gold hotels have been far superior with gardens to sit in etc which the Yaramar doesn’t have and far better pool areas. If you suffer from vertigo maybe one of the rooms on the lower floors would be preferable!!! ;o) We were absolutely fine on the second floor and any outside noise didn’t disturb us at all – infact we enjoyed the bustle!

Our transfer home to Malaga airport was very efficient and the rep gave very clear instructions. Malaga airport is very pleasant and clean, with a wide choice of reataurants and shops.

We are pleased that we have visited the Costa Del Sol, and will definitely return but we are not sure we would choose this hotel again, despite its many good points. The pool situation has put us off as we enjoy lazing round the pool when we wish to! The sunbeds are understandably very close together because of the lack of space. Also we would like to see the addition of an all-inclusive option, which the hotel at present doesn’t offer. We have returned to other Thomson Gold’s in the past and would be sad to see Gold holidays disappear because we do enjoy being entertained on holiday, without children if possible. Children are great but we enjoy the ambience an adult hotel brings to our holidays. This is the first time we have been on a 10 day holiday and have decided two weeks is more our scene! ;o))))))

Hotel Yaramar has good and negatives points ... we would have to think seriously about returning here during the high season, maybe the pool would be more inviting at another time of year. We will monitor future guests’ reviews prior to making any booking; it is all down to personal preferences! We have already looked into villa hire as we think Fuengirola and the Costa Del Sol have much to offer for a varied and interesting holiday in the Sun! Adios! ;o)

Room Tip: If you suffer from vertigo consider requesting a room on the lower floors.

Thanks a lot for your well detailed review. We are happy to hear you made the most of your stay at Hotel Yaramar and did a lot of sightseeing. As you well said Fuengirola and Costa Sol have lots to offer, so we are sure you still have some wonderful places to discover. We are aware the swimming pool can be very busy in certain times of year, so maybe a visit during spring or autumn would suit you better as it is more quiet but still good temperatures. We hope to see you back.

We have just returned on the 21st aug from an 11 night stay at the Yaramar, first the good points,I would just like to say how wonderful the entertainment team,Elle,Dan,Craig & Millie were, four very talented young people who work extremely hard putting on shows and activities during the day, always got a smile and a cheery word for everyone, now the bad points, this is no way a four star hotel,Thomson need to seriously review this, although the food in the restaurant was fine and the staff freindly on occasions when busy there were no glasses for water or cutlery so we found our own NOT GOOD,the pool situation is a joke and I don't know about anyone else but my idea of fun is not jumping out of bed at daft o'clock to go and queue for up to an hour to get a sunbed, also the pool was not very clean and on several occasions the pool boy cleaned the tiles around the inside edge while guests were swimming this must be a health hazzard, the air conditioning was appalling and we came out of the dining room before finishing our meals more than once as the heat was overpowering, although we found the rooms to be of average standard and cleaned daily the fact that you have to pay for use of a fridge is a total rip off and something I have never experienced before when staying in any hotel let alone a 4*,and is it absolutely nessasary for the lifts to bing bong it makes it impossible to relax in your room,so come on Thomson this is 2012 not the 1970's.

Room Tip: A higher floor is great for the view and a pool and sea view.

Returned On Sunday the 19th of August after a two week stay first the good points the Yaramar is in a great location right on the seafront promenade all the rooms either have a great sea view or a pool and sea view the entertainment staff are all very hard working they never stop and keep the holiday makers well entertained the reception area and down stairs public areas are impressive very large and open ,Good point is you get a free safe .
Now the not so good points , like a lot of people have said there are only 200sunbeds packed in around a not too clean pool on the restraunt roof there are some beds on the beach owned by the hotel but thay cost 5 ueros for two and a parassol , if Thompsons are advertising this as a gold hotel why do you have to pay for the beds on the beach , The food at the hotel was just ok sometimes it was not as hot as you would like and not to well presented as other 4 stars i have stayed at( look at my write up last year on the Valentine Star in Calen Bosh Menorca now that was a proper 4 star ) .
The room we stayed in was in need of a update the fittings woodwork laminate was peeling off woodchip inside laminate had obviously been wet at one point and had expanded the lamps etc looked tatty grouting etc needed renewing in the bathroom picture frames funiture bashed and scratched need renewing black out curtains hanging off .
Air conditioning in the room ok but public areas like the rsturaunt and corridoors very hot ,
Also there is a problem in the hotel with cockroaches in the toilets near the pool saw 4 dead ones one morning which was a bit off putting also there was cans of roach killer behind reception and at the Thompson desk however did not see any in our room .
Having said all this we did enjoy our holiday first time to Fuengarola and its a great place this hotel could be great again if money was spent , I hope Thompsons read this as they are always saying its the holiday makers feed back they rely on.(SORRY THOMPSONS BUT THIS IS NOT A 4 STAR GOLD ANYMORE IT OBVOUSLY HAS BEEN BUT NOT NOW ).

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor its quieter

Recently returned from two weeks at the Hotel Yaramar staying as a single. Good news you get a twin room with all facilities. Mine was facing the sea on the second floor; good views of the beach & along the promenade, not so good at way too early o'clock when they empty the bottle banks on the promenade opposite. Having stayed in the hotel previous years the recession had clearly affected staff levels, you were left to find your own table in the resturant, whereas previously you were shown to a table and there seemed to fewer staff available to clear tables, restock buffet etc. however food quality was good if a little repetitive. Due to the location of the pool & sun terrace on the 1st floor of the hotel there is limited space for sun beds which meant most if not all were taken by 9 o'clock. Again staff cuts were a factor here, last year a pool boy was on permanent duty, and any sun beds reserved for over an hour without being used, the towels were removed and freed up for latecomers; this year no pool boy so beds were left with towels on and it was up to you to complain to get the towels removed. The hotel areas were always clean & rooms were cleaned, towels changed daily. Overall despite the obvious cutbacks I thouroughly enjoyed my time at the Yaramar and in all probability will be back next year. Lastly and definately not least a word about the entertainment team, Dan, Craig, Millie & Elle - all work incredibly hard for ridiculous hours to keep you entertained with games during the day (all welcome but they never push you if you're not interested), through to fabulous shows at night. All of them were incredibly talented, Millie in particular has an amazing voice. I've read many comments regarding the Aquarium Show Lounge, and agree it's not an ideal venue, but it really is worth going down there once during your stay to see a show, probably the best being "One Fine Day" every other Saturday.

Room Tip: Rooms lower down get more noise & I found rooms facing the sea were noisier the those over the pool
