Taberna d’Adélia was a cool restaurant. We walked in here because our Rick Steve Portugal book recommended it, and we learned from stickers in the window that it was also in recent Michelin guides. As soon as you walk in the door, you see fresh seafood on ice and in tanks. The lobsters were plentiful and large!
We sat on a heated covered patio where we could catch glimpses of the grill and the sunset.
Service was good. I appreciate that unlike most other restaurants in Portugal, when servers bring couvert items to the table, they point you to the prices and let you choose what you want. The selection was very tempting too, with house-made paté and toast, sardines, cheese, olives, and barnacles. No stale bread and cheap oil here! (However, we still ended up with a €0.5 bread charge despite not touching any bread. Oh well.)
We asked to try a couple of barnacles since we'd never had them before and didn't want to commit to eating a whole plate. Our server showed us how to pull them apart. We had fried sardines and lobster rice (€75 per kg x 1.3kg lobster). The rice came in a large pot with a tomato and pepper broth. There were lots of little clams and about six large prawns. The dish was extremely aromatic, and the lobster was delicious. There was more rice than the two of us could finish.
There were other touches that made the meal enjoyable. The wine list was on an iPad with tasting notes. The wine bottle was served with a pouring spout to avoid nasty drips. The lobster pick was very easy to use and effective. We were given plenty of extra napkins and lemon-scented alcohol wipes for our fingers.
This was probably one of the best meals we've had on this trip so far.
