“Little Gem”

Roscommon County Museum
Reviewed 6 September 2018

€2 price tag is excellent. This is a small museum bursting with great stories and History. Take your time and read the different newspaper clippings. They have everything from a Irish mythology, the famine, an old jail door, a old sausage maker, 1980's apple , local folklore, connaught rangers and world war 1 helmets. It may not have the high-techness of a modern museum but its a place of substance and character. If your a History and story buff its a must. Lovely staff who run it.

the museum is operated by enthusiastic volunteers. if one volunteer does not know the answer, another on will. There are great photographs of life inn the 19th and early 20th century. Even up to 1950 the town had not come into the modern age.
Congratulations to the team to operate this facility.

They only have a FB web page and it listed no address.
This place is tiny. It does reside in a former Presbyterian church but from the outside you may be unsure you have the right place since the stained-glass window on the front is the star of David. We learned from Danny at the museum that the church was built by welsh craftsmen who brought that window over from Wales with them. There is an interesting mix of memorabilia here, a little bit of everything. Definitely worth checking out. Building is located adjacent from the old prison, and the former rectory, now a restaurant, is right next door.
We were here about 45 minutes.

Last here in 2015 and several new exibits now in place, old telephone exchange from the Court House, wonderful Surgeons Field operating kit with saw included. My Mother's Wat time travel card which I donated in 2014 is in the passport cabinet. Only €2 admission and we'll worth a visit. The same building houses the Tourist Office.

This is quaint museum made even better by the helpful friendly and hospitable gentleman who gave me so much time to show me the exhibits and discuss local and national history. There is so much to see and discuss in such a small area.

I stopped here for a break from driving and what a gem of a place to find.
